Introducing IBM z15

It’s finally here! Its with great pleasure that today we can unveil the new IBM z15, the latest and greatest addition to the IBM Z family… and also the reason I disappeared off with the family to Poughkeepsie, NY for best part of 2 years.

I’ve had many offering management roles in IBM, indeed several specifically in the IBM Z portfolio, but having the opportunity to become offering manger for the z15 has been a tremendous privilege and a journey I could never have expected. The team I’ve had the pleasure of working with across, Development, Design, Manufacturing, Sales, Marketing and all of the other functions really have pulled out all the stops to bring this incredible offering to market.

With the z15 I truly believe we’ve introduced a game changing system to help our clients in their journey to hybrid cloud. Over this program we’ve worked with more than 340 clients across 100 different enterprises to refine this offering, right the way from the casters (yes the wheels!), to the processor, system structure and all the way through the software stack. There is a huge amount of capability in this new system, but there are 3 aspects that really stand out.

1. Encryption Everywhere - We’ve taken what we introduced with z14 and Pervasive Encryption to a whole new level by helping clients not only secure their data throughout the hybrid cloud, but also delivery privacy controls for their data. This is all achieved through a new technology called Data Privacy Passports, with industry first capability that we’re excited to bring to market.
2. Cloud Native Development - As a developer you can use all of the tools and frameworks you want to build new cloud native applications, and integrate with your existing Z investments… and what’s more we’re committed to bringing Red Hat OpenShift exploitation to the platform. More flexibility, portability and choice than ever before.
3. Instant Recovery - We set the gold standard for resilience on the Z platform, and now we’re taking that further with Instant Recovery by unlocking system capacity to help you recover from both planned and unplanned outages to get you back to business up to 50% faster than previously possible… and uniquely even help catch up on your transactions. I don’t know any other platform that can do that.

This really is the tip of the iceberg though, because as you’ll find with z15 there is much more to discover from the modular 19” system design, to on-chip compression to help you manage huge growth in data, to the scalability improvements we’ve put in which helps us now be able to execute 1 TRILLION web transactions a day in a single system.
