Introducing the Digital Diagnostician: The IT World’s Answer to Medical Detectives

I just recently finished watching The Resident on Netflix. One of the lead characters, Dr. Conrad Hawkins, is an internist that is continually called upon for his ability to identify and save patients with his abilities as a diagnostician. His almost encyclopedic knowledge of the human body and disease allows him to deduce problems across a wide range of specialties. And all the while I kept thinking, “if that role existed in IT its one I would really enjoy doing!” I have coined this role Digital Diagnostician.

Drawing parallels with the medical field's diagnosticians, who are adept at identifying and addressing complex health issues, Digital Diagnosticians specialize in diagnosing and resolving intricate digital problems. This innovative role is becoming increasingly vital as organizations strive to maintain robust, secure, and efficient IT environments.

What is a Digital Diagnostician?

A Digital Diagnostician is an IT professional with a unique blend of analytical skills, technical expertise, and a problem-solving mindset. Their primary responsibility is to diagnose complex issues within digital systems, much like a medical diagnostician would for patients. These professionals delve into system anomalies, performance bottlenecks, security vulnerabilities, and other technical challenges, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools and methodologies to identify root causes accurately. The level of experience and understanding of the entire stack of computing technologies is a must to be a successful diagnostician. From mainframe to mobile, from fiber to WiMax, through a winding and complex data flow across layers of applications some dating back as far as 30 years.

The Importance of Digital Diagnosticians

In today’s interconnected digital ecosystem, systems are more intricate and interdependent than ever before. As businesses increasingly rely on technology to drive operations, the complexity of IT infrastructures grows, making it challenging to pinpoint issues when they arise. This is where Digital Diagnosticians shine. They are the critical link between identifying a problem and implementing a solution, ensuring that digital systems operate seamlessly.

Digital Diagnosticians play a pivotal role in maintaining the health of IT environments. They collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather data, analyze logs, and interpret patterns, transforming raw information into actionable insights. Their responsibilities extend beyond mere identification of issues; they also recommend strategic solutions to enhance system efficiency, reliability, and security. By doing so, they help organizations avoid costly downtime and maintain business continuity.

JP Morgenthal, excellent article about a Digital Diagnostician. Looks like you are describing not only a Diagnostician but also a Prescriptionist. "A successful Digital Diagnostician also needs to have strong analytical skills to interpret complex data sets and identify patterns that might indicate a problem. They should be proficient in root cause analysis techniques and capable of troubleshooting issues in a systematic and logical manner. Moreover, Digital Diagnosticians must stay abreast of emerging trends and continuously update their skills to tackle evolving challenges." "Their responsibilities extend beyond mere identification of issues; they also recommend strategic solutions to enhance system efficiency, reliability, and security." I believe that, except for a few rare people, that would be too much to expect from a human being on a sustained basis. However, it would be a perfect use case for an #AI solution given the enormity of the underlying technologies, the requirement of deep experience and continuous learning in multiple disciplines, and the crucial analytical skills to come up with a reliable resolution in a crunch.
