Introducing Chatgpt’s Second Cousin, Rosalyn: A Deeper Look at Analytical AI vs. Generative AI

We’ve all been to family reunions. Some good, some not. Extended family relationships are generally unique. Whether it’s Grandpa Tony who tells inappropriate jokes or great Aunt Sue who always kisses you on the mouth, family can be a particularly strange aspect of life. However, there are those who pull their closest network from blood relatives. How do you think the mafia has preserved power generation over generation? Disregarding any illegal activities, when blood is shared, typically, the bond is stronger.?

In today’s blog post, we’re inviting you to explore the familiar relationship between the popular Chatgpt and its ever-loving second cousin, once removed, Rosalyn.ai!

WHO & WHAT?

Chatgpt is among the hottest topics in technology today. “What is chatgpt? Who is chaptgpt? Where is Chatgpt? How does it work?” are all questions being asked by those who have internet access. Chatgpt is an acronym for “Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer ''. For those of us with average sized brains, that means that someone with an above average sized brain (OpenAI) created a technology designed to have basic human-like conversations with people.?

Who exactly are these above average sized brains that created Chatgpt? OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research laboratory, claims ownership for the development of Chatgpt. OpenAI was founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman. The original goal was to develop a friendly AI that would benefit all of humanity. Chatgpt is no one trick pony. Through machine learning algorithms, it answers (almost) any question and provides information about any topic. The information is accessible over various platforms and is delivered in a familiar text messaging or instant messaging like exchange. Chatgpt is also available in English, Spanish, French, German, and new languages are being added regularly, making it universally accessible.

What, then, is Rosalyn AI? Rosalyn is an assessment monitoring company serving higher ed institutions, known for its proactive proctoring design. Chatgpt and Rosalyn share the same artificial intelligence bloodline, but differ in their overall functionality and target audience. In order to truly understand the familial relationship between Chatgpt and Rosalyn, we first must understand the differences between generative AI and analytical AI. Chatgpt is part of the generative AI line. Generative AI is designed to “generate”, hence the name, new content. New content might include images, text, or videos. The generative nature of Chatgpt is created through algorithms that pull from existing data. In contrast, analytical AI takes mass amounts of data and produces observations or analyses of the information collected.?

Rosalyn was founded by Noor Akbari, an Afghanistan native who trail blazed the digital realm by creating the country’s first digital print shop. After selling the business and immigrating to the US, Akbari spear-headed various initiatives in language assessment, which spurred the realization that artificial intelligence could enhance the processes significantly.?

Both generative and analytical AI are used in the education industry. For example, generative AI can be used to create new educational materials (lesson plans, worksheets, graphic organizers). Analytical AI might be used to identify and assess patterns or relationships in data, such as test results. Theoretically, the generation of these materials in real time will allow classroom teachers to be more fully engaged in direct instruction.

WHEN?

ChatGPT celebrated an official release in the summer of 2020 amidst the COVID-19 global pandemic. Rosalyn AI is just over two years older than Chatgpt, dating it’s beginning to the Spring of 2018. However, knowing birthdates isn’t as important as knowing when these cousins might best serve an audience. There is much discussion surrounding the legitimacy of Chatgpt in academia. Is it considered plagiarism to utilize Chatgpt’s generated responses in formal academic documents? Probably, when implemented without proper citation. Nonetheless, Chaptgpt can be instrumental as a brainstorming and/or organizational tool. Consider the generative nature of Chatgpt like a study partner, someone that might be able to help conceptualize certain topics. On the other hand, Rosalyn might be compared to a Jiminy Cricket character, a superego that will keep you focused on the task at hand (assessment proctoring).

WHERE?

Chaptgpt can be found at chat.openai.com and is available to anyone with internet access. It is similar to other well known chat systems like Microsoft Teams or Facebook Messenger. Chatgpt also maintains a running menu of generated responses which allows for users to return and review previous requests.?

WHY?

Currently, Chatgpt is a headliner and likely will be a leader in the AI family. With the ever-evolving development of technology, generative AI could be a means of finding higher rated efficiency in the workforce. Ranging from customer services chatbots and virtual assistants to language translation, generative AI certainly increases the speed at which content can be produced. Though more funneled and specific in skill set, Rosalyn also allows for more efficiency in assessment through proactive proctoring. Keep in mind that while AI has not yet replaced human intelligence, whether it is generative or analytical in function, AI will propel technology toward a revolutionized future.

Conclusively, it is understood that family relationships vary in continuity. But understanding one’s family will allow for an individual to better discern tendencies, biological propensities, and ultimately, potential capabilities. Technologically speaking, understanding the similarities between Chatgpt and Rosalyn will help consumers to identify overlap and capitalize on each platform’s abilities.
