Tackling Racial Inequities in Greater Manchester and Beyond

In the heart of Greater Manchester, a transformative force is at work, dedicated to addressing racial inequities and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. The Black United Representation Network CIC (BURN), established in February 2020, stands as a beacon of hope and action for Black professionals and Black-owned businesses across the region. BURN's mission is clear: to leverage the power of allyship, increase Black representation on decision-making boards, and create economic opportunities that bridge the gap between aspiration and achievement for the Black community. The brainchild of Marilyn Comrie , the organisation was brought to life by nine prominent Black business owners and professionals across the city region.

The Birth of a Movement

BURN was born out of a pressing need to address systemic racial disparities that have long hindered the progress of Black individuals in Greater Manchester and the North of England. Recognising that true change requires a concerted and collective effort, BURN set out to build a robust network of allies and advocates committed to dismantling the barriers that perpetuate inequality. From its inception, BURN has championed the cause of racial justice, striving to create pathways for Black professionals to thrive and for Black-owned businesses to flourish.

Our Mission and Vision

At the core of BURN's mission is the belief that diversity and inclusion are not just moral imperatives but essential components of a thriving and dynamic society. BURN envisions a Greater Manchester (and beyond), where Black professionals are not only present in leadership roles but are actively shaping the future of the region. This vision extends to the economic sphere, where Black-owned businesses have the resources, support, and opportunities to innovate, compete, and succeed on a global scale.

Increasing Black Representation on Decision-Making Boards

One of BURN's primary objectives is to increase the number of Black professionals on decision-making boards across various sectors. Representation matters, and having diverse voices at the table leads to better decision-making, more innovative solutions, and a more inclusive organisational culture. Through initiatives like the Board Apprentice Initiative, BURN is providing Black professionals with the training, mentorship, and opportunities needed to secure board positions and influence key decisions.

Capacity Building for Black-Owned Businesses

Economic empowerment is a cornerstone of BURN's mission. Black-owned businesses face unique challenges, from limited access to capital and networks to systemic biases that hinder growth. BURN is dedicated to capacity building, offering Black entrepreneurs the tools, resources, and support needed to overcome these challenges. Through workshops, mentorship programmes, and access to procurement opportunities, BURN is helping Black-owned businesses to innovate, compete, and thrive.

Expanding Export Opportunities with Africa and the Caribbean

Global markets offer immense potential for Black-owned businesses, and BURN is committed to opening doors to these opportunities. By fostering connections and partnerships with markets in Africa and the Caribbean, BURN aims to expand export opportunities for Black-owned businesses in Greater Manchester. This not only boosts local economies but also strengthens ties with communities across the diaspora, creating a network of mutual support and shared prosperity.

Key Initiatives and Programmes

The Board Apprentice Initiative

The Board Apprentice Initiative is a flagship programme designed to address the underrepresentation of Black professionals on boards. By providing aspiring board members with the necessary skills, experience, and networks, BURN is paving the way for greater diversity in leadership positions. Participants in the programme gain hands-on experience through board placements, mentorship from seasoned professionals, and training in governance and leadership. This initiative not only enhances individual career trajectories but also enriches the boards on which they serve, bringing fresh perspectives and diverse insights to the table.

The Executive Development Programme (EDP)

The Executive Development Programme (EDP) is another critical component of BURN's strategy to elevate Black professionals into leadership roles. The EDP offers a comprehensive suite of training, coaching, and networking opportunities tailored to the unique needs of Black executives. Through the programme, participants develop the skills and confidence needed to navigate the complexities of executive leadership, positioning them for success in their careers and making a lasting impact on their organisations.

Business Capacity Building Workshops

Recognising the challenges faced by Black-owned businesses, BURN hosts a series of capacity building workshops aimed at equipping entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. These workshops cover a range of topics, from business planning and financial management to marketing and procurement strategies. By providing practical, hands-on training, BURN empowers Black business owners to overcome barriers, seize opportunities, and achieve sustainable growth.

Export Opportunities Programme

The Export Opportunities Programme is designed to connect Black-owned businesses in Greater Manchester with lucrative markets in Africa and the Caribbean. Through trade missions, networking events, and strategic partnerships, BURN facilitates access to new markets, helping businesses to expand their reach and increase their revenues. This programme not only benefits individual businesses but also contributes to the economic vitality of the region, fostering a more diverse and resilient economy.

The Power of Allyship

Central to BURN's mission is the concept of allyship – the idea that true progress requires the support and active engagement of allies from all backgrounds. Allyship is about more than just words; it is about taking concrete actions to support and uplift those who face systemic barriers. BURN works tirelessly to cultivate a network of allies who are committed to advancing racial equity and inclusion. This network includes individuals, organisations, and institutions that recognise the value of diversity and are dedicated to creating a more just and equitable society.

Building a Collaborative Network

BURN's success is built on the strength of its collaborative partnerships. By working with a diverse array of stakeholders – from government agencies and educational institutions to private sector companies and community organisations – BURN is able to amplify its impact and drive systemic change. These partnerships are essential for creating a holistic and sustainable approach to tackling racial inequities, ensuring that progress is made across multiple fronts.

Membership and Partnership Opportunities

BURN invites organisations and individuals who share its vision of a more inclusive and equitable society to join its network. Membership with BURN offers a range of benefits, including access to exclusive events, training programmes, and networking opportunities. By becoming a member, organisations can demonstrate their commitment to diversity and inclusion, support meaningful change, and contribute to the collective effort to build a fairer society.

In addition to membership, BURN seeks collaborative partners to join forces in advancing its mission. Whether through joint initiatives, sponsorships, or advocacy efforts, there are numerous ways for organisations to get involved and make a difference. By working together, we can leverage our collective resources, expertise, and influence to create lasting change and build a more equitable future.

The journey towards racial equity and inclusion is long and challenging, but it is a journey that we must undertake together. BURN is leading the way in Greater Manchester, demonstrating that change is not only possible but achievable when we come together with a shared purpose.
