World Education Initiative Supporting HIV-Affected Children Shifts to Locally Led Network
We are pleased to announce that our Bantwana Initiative is transitioning to local leadership through the new, independent Bantwana Regional Network. The network convenes Bantwana Initiative national organizations in Eswatini, Uganda, and Zimbabwe to share knowledge, pool resources, and amplify Bantwana’s work across sub-Saharan Africa.
For nearly two decades, the Bantwana Initiative has partnered with governments, organizations, and communities in sub-Saharan Africa to implement high-impact, community-based health, education, and social protection interventions. At JSI, we are excited for Bantwana’s future through the Regional Network and look forward to continuing our partnership.” —Muka Chikuba-McLeod, President and CEO, JSI
The History of the Bantwana Initiative of World Education
The Bantwana Initiative developed out of World Education’s Africa portfolio in 2006 to fill service gaps across sub-Saharan Africa for HIV-affected children and their communities. Every year since, Bantwana has provided comprehensive care to more than 600,000 individuals in seven African countries.
Meet the Network
In alignment with Bantwana’s founding vision and consistent efforts to support locally led solutions, three country teams–Zimbabwe, Eswatini, and Uganda–evolved into independent local organizations in 2018, 2021, and 2023 respectively. The network maintains the Bantwana mission, brand, and presence, separate from World Education and JSI.
