Introducing Artificial Intelligence

Firstly, welcome to the first edition of Caring Bytes, a newsletter aimed at sharing the latest updates of Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to change the way we live and work and in this newsletter I will be exploring what AI is, the types and some of the benefits and negatives.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is also known as AI and is the development of computer systems being able to perform tasks that are typically done by people, including processing language, problem-solving, and learning. AI is the ability for a computer to think and learn, and therefore can process vast amounts of data quickly and make predictions, automate tasks, and even adapt to changing circumstances.

Types of Artificial Intelligence?

AI is all around us, and whether or not you realise it, you are using it every single day. There are two categories associated with AI:

  1. Narrow AI - this is only able to carry out one specific trained task. Narrow AI is something most of us know quite well and includes things such as Siri or Alexa, self-driving cars, chatbots on websites and phone facial recognition.
  2. General AI - this is flexible and able to execute a multitude of tasks and can be programmed to learn and teach itself, something we refer to as machine learning. We don't see much of this yet in society.

Narrow vs General AI
Everyday and potential uses of AI

Benefits of Artificial Intelligence?

  • Reduction in human error
  • Available 24×7
  • Helps in repetitive work
  • Providers digital assistance?
  • Providers faster information, answers and decisions.

Negatives of Artificial Intelligence?

  • Can be costly
  • Lacks the human touch
  • AI relies on data and therefore there can easily be data breaches if you do not keep the data and AI tool safe
  • It can be bias and given unfair treatments
  • It can reduce talent and people to become over-reliant on its abilities

Before coming out of front line work I must admit I was looking more and more in AI in the way we support the people using our services. I used to believe that it was way for social services to cut cost, (don't get me wrong I do still believe this), but I have seen the people who I have support using different types of AI and it has given given them pride and independence again. Seeing one of my gentlemen being able to control his house with just his voice instead of getting others to do it him. Things we all would take granted like opening our own curtains when we are ready, turning the temp up or down, getting magically morning nectar known as coffee started, turning the lights on and off. All really basic stuff for most but can be so challenging for some. AI is here to regain or give some people for the first time independence, which is MASSIVE and should be celebrated. I agree with the negatives and one of them very much so, the lacking of the human touch. Where independence is amazing and what we all wont. Loneliness and isolation is something we don't want for anyone. The powers at be need to find a happy medium and remember that they are dealing with people. On the whole I am a fan of AI can't wait to see whats to come.
