Intro : Becoming A Stronger Leader : Are some people simply born leaders?

Maybe, maybe not. While people may come into the

world with certain traits, it’s much more plausible that

they hone their skills from an early age. However, to be a

truly relevant and effective leader, someone who can lead

an organization and not just a sandbox, skills need to be

honed and continuously strengthened.

The truth is – most people learn how to be leaders.

Once more, it’s never too late to start!

Reasons you should strengthen your leadership

skills (even if you’re not a leader yet):

? Increase performance.

? Improve overall work environment.

? Gain knowledge and confidence.

? Support fellow teammates.

? Inspire action, empathy and encouragement.

? Build morale.

  1. What type of leader are you?

What type do you want to be? While no one leadership

type is better than another, it’s important to recognize

which one you identify with most. Since there are

strengths and weaknesses in all, knowing this can help you

grow your strengths and avoid the drawbacks.

Some of the more common leadership styles include:

Coach - Visionary - Autocratic - Democratic - Delegator

2. Define strengths & opportunities

Be aware of yourself and your ability to lead

What inspires you? What qualities do you have that serves

you well as a leader? What may need some improvement?

How do you find this out? Try taking this self assessment!

And, don’t forget the importance of asking others for

feedback, both from leaders and those you lead!

3. Look to develop a mentorship :

Has someone served as your role model?

Have they done something you aspire to do? Reach out to

them to formalize a mentorship relationship. Seek them

out for advice and to improve your skills. Also, what about

giving back? You may make a great mentor yourself! Gain

insight on your own mentoring mindset with this

assessment from the Women in Leadership program.

4. Set and execute attainable goals :

A good leader sets goals. A great leader sees

them through.

A goal could be improving your own skills or completing a

company task. Whatever it is, it should be SMART

(Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).

Practice patience and persistence during execution, and

don't be afraid to admit failure – turn it into a learning

opportunity. Once your goal is achieved, celebrate! And be

sure to reward those who've helped along the way.

5. How your team performs says a lot about your

ability to lead them.

Leaders who are clear, respectful, delegate, and trust their

teams result in higher productivity and efficiency. Want to

quickly find the difference between a great leader and an

impostor? Pay attention when things go wrong!

? A great leader won't throw their team under the bus.

? They'll take responsibility for any inconsistencies.

? They’ll work alongside their team to get it right.

6. Practice, practice, practice: Be a better leader – don’t wait to be asked.

Show your commitment by taking leadership courses.

Remember leadership takes practice. There are countless

ways to demonstrate the discipline of leadership in your

daily routine, including meeting deadlines, being reliable

and trustworthy, guiding others, and acting with integrity.

Strengthen your skills by first leading yourself. Only then

can you stand up to lead others.

Lead the way. the wrap. Strengthen your skills with courses that count!
