Intro to AI and Machine Learning

What is AI?

By definition, Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence, only processed by machines. It has rapidly grown in popularity since it was introduced to humanity in 1956 - at least this is when the term was officially coined. Even though this term is about 65 years old, AI in general is still in its infancy and has a long way to go with the future looking bright. With big companies such as Amazon and Google using AI as part of their everyday lives, it's only a matter of time before this incredible machine-processed intelligence is part of everyone's daily lives. I take that back - AI is part of most everyone's daily life. Think about using Siri on your iPhone or Amazon's Alexa to ask what the weather is or to order something to your door step...this is AI at work.

What is Machine Learning?

Machine Learning is considered a branch of AI that takes information such as data and algorithms and uses them to learn for itself, much like humans. There is continual improvement to the accuracy of ML which allows algorithms to gain experience and make better decisions. This makes it easier on the consumer by the machine doing all the work for them rather than searching for results themselves.

How Are AI and ML Different?

As previously stated, ML is a subset of AI and it allows machines to learn from data without it being programmed explicitly . I would say AI is a more broad intelligence system that can perform various complex tasks whereas ML is working to create machines that can perform only the tasks for which they are trained.

Current Applications of AI & ML in Digital Marketing

Seeing that these concepts are interwoven into many marketing strategies, I will touch on three key aspects that firms of any size can implement into their digital marketing efforts.

  1. Chatbot Usage - This is basically 24/7 client support that provides real time answers to customers in need of their questions answered. It collects data on what customers are struggling with most which can lead to ML detecting what needs improvement across the site.
  2. Content/Product Recommendations - AI uses algorithms to predict what products you would like based off your demographics and profile information. This can drive conversion rates up since AI is making it easier for the customer to buy what they didn't know they needed.
  3. Improved User Experience - Much like content/product recommendations, improving user experience drives conversions based on high quality marketing campaigns for every user. AI can design a campaign for every user and persuade them to take anticipated actions.

What Direction are AI & ML Headed?

Like anyone in the marketing field, it is hard to predict the future in its entirety, but logical guesses as to the direction of AI and ML are not hard to make. As more and more companies implement AI to their daily lives, it is only a matter of time before this simulation of human intelligence is the hard work behind any business's operation. One field that will benefit greatly from AI is the medical field. Personalized treatments and illness will be easier to detect and a provided plan of action will make the job of doctors and nurses less complicated as AI leaves a smaller margin of error.
