What fascinates me most about leadership is its inherent simplicity.
Yet, mastering it? That is an elusive, never-ending quest— making it even more captivating.
Every day brings new challenges to connect deeply, motivate effectively, and coach with clarity—all to bring out the best in those we are privileged to lead.
The daily context is fluid, requiring a continuous learning mindset because it is ever evolving. There is always something to learn.
As General Schwarzkopf highlights in his story here at 3:05 – 7:21 mins , regardless of how well you think you may be doing, it's entirely possible that you are ahead by only one point. Even worse, some team members might think they’ve got a dumb coach.
I first felt the gravity of leadership on September 11th, shortly after I graduated from West Point.
Naively, at 18, with a searing ambition to play Division 1 college football, I had shrugged off the 5-year service commitment. I thought, "What's the big deal? Peace-time Army, serve your time, do some cool stuff, then move on."
Now here I stood, emotionally recognizing the full weight of volunteering to be a military leader, and well aware of the hazards of this chosen profession.
It all became very real, very fast.
Inside the granite walls of our schoolhouse, I studied from the richest examples of leadership that history has to offer. It started to become increasingly that leadership, while seemingly straightforward, is layered with a haunting complexity.
Have you ever noticed that when you read about leadership, it often feels like you may already know the answers?
Be competent, master your field, support your team, train them to excel, build strong relationships with key managers, communicate a clear vision, align your efforts, develop a solid strategy, and have a contingency plan. It all seems like common sense as the list goes on.
The answers to the test seem intuitive. On the surface, leadership is not that complicated. But once in the game, you discover that it’s really hard.
Every moment in leadership, your responsibility to lead stares you right back in the face.
Success or failure depends on your performance in a cumulative series of individual moments.
Throughout my career, I've worked with, for, and alongside many stellar and a handful of less-than-stellar examples of leadership. Each one taught me valuable lessons—what to embrace and what to avoid.
Authentic leadership, I've learned, is less about instructing and more about inspiring continuous improvement. It’s a practice—a journey of ongoing development where each experience enriches your future approach.

Dee Hock captures this succinctly:
"Make a short list of all things done to you that you abhorred. Don’t do them to others. Ever. Make another list of things done to you that you loved. Do them to others. Always."
Leadership is the dynamic, life-giving element of every business.
Without it, the resources of production remain just that—resources. It’s leadership that transforms these resources into exceptional outcomes.
Now what does this have to do with executive search and recruitment? I’m glad you asked.
Well, if there is anything more challenging than leadership itself, it is assessing, selecting and transitioning perfect-fit leaders to reliably accomplish the business objectives.
And so, these days, I am fueled by the challenge of enabling clients to first clarify the specific leadership gaps that present risk to the business. From there, we can leverage our combined experience and perspectives to attract, assess, and select the best leaders in the market for their specific situation.
An authentic match of client and candidate is an awesome challenge. When done right it makes all the difference.
