Nutrient use efficiency is a fundamental approach in agricultural systems to continuously improve the sustainable competitiveness for crop production and quality. The green revolution has been marked by increased productivity over the past 50 years, which in many places worldwide was also marked by land use degradation. Currently, the world is preparing to meet the demand of the future bio-based society for nutritious food, feed, raw materials, and energy.?
To meet such striking demand we will need to advance our comprehensive understanding of a myriad of processes related to nutrient bioavailability in system production, affected directly or indirectly by plant roots and microbial communities, mechanisms of nutrient uptake and transport from cell to the whole plant level, interdependence with biochemical and physiological plant traits, biotic and abiotic stress, as well as novel techniques supported by laboratory analyses and decision making tools based on data analytics and digital intelligence.?
This will be key for the world to improve current agricultural productivity, protect ecosystems, while promoting a bioeconomy.?
Then, concerned with the complexity of such challenges, the International Plant Nutrition Council organizes its colloquium to foster communication and synergies for global prosperity in a changing world.??
For this special issue, we invite reviews, synthesis, opinion and primary research articles that extend and contribute to plant nutrition research. Review articles (Review or Synthesis) must be critical in approach and provide particularly novel and far reaching insights and new ideas. Primary research articles should report hypothesis-driven investigations that provide new insights into mechanisms and processes involved in plant nutrition and closely related topics.?
