#InterviewTip – What EVERY #Interviewer is Thinking When they Meet you

#InterviewTip – What EVERY #Interviewer is Thinking When they Meet you

I’m going to get straight to the point on this one, because the topic excites me and its something I’ve periodically posted about in the past: the #Interviewer is NOT there to hear about each and every detail of your career. Remember that!

Yes of course they may want to know who you are and what you’re like as a person. They certainly want to know about your skill set and the interesting projects you’ve done in the past. And they absolutely want to make sure you’ll fit in with the team and company culture if that’s important to them as well.

But there’s one question each and every #Interviewer meeting you for an actual, real, qualified job who has the intention to hire someone, is wondering in the forefront of their minds – do you know what it is?

Here it is:

How is this individual going to help us solve the problem associated with this position?

How will they help solve the problem currently being experienced by our team/department/company? How are they going to do it? Have they solved similar problems in the past? Do they have the kind of skill set to solve the problem? Etc.

Those are the underlying questions, or variations of questions, the #Interviewer is wondering during the #interview. If you’re not addressing those, you’re not moving in the right direction. I made a short post recently where I suggested candidates “not fall in love with the sound of their own voice” – make sure you’re not yapping away endlessly about something which excites you, and by the way might very well be something very interesting, cool, or exciting, but may not have any relevance whatsoever to the problem the employer is looking to solve through hiring someone for the position you’re interviewing for. And if you do get caught up in the excitement of something irrelevant, that's fine - just steer it back to the core task at hand: solving the problem they're experiencing.

So your task at the #Interview – or ideally before the interview if you can find out this information – is to:

1)     Figure exactly what the business problem is associated with the position you're interviewing for – i.e. what problem does this position seek to solve

2)     How do I articulate and show them that I can solve this problem? What skill sets, previous experience/projects do I bring to the table which would make me the most eligible person to solve this problem?

Look – I’m not saying not to mention all of your exciting projects; its important to mention significant results you’ve gotten for your previous employers. What I’m saying here is don’t lose sight of the primary reason why the person or people sitting across the table from you are there. They have a problem. They need help. They want to know if you’re the one who is going to solve the problem. If you have an understanding of WHAT that problem is, you establish a strong foundation for selling yourself as the solution!
