Confidence at Interview

If you believe it, you can do it. A positive mindset will help you go far in your career and life.

It may be that a previous employer has knocked your confidence - don't let this setback flow over into your next role! If you don't believe in yourself, no one else will!

Most employers want assurance. They don't want to worry that you will disappear off with another company as soon as your training period is over, so if you are already trained in the desired areas and know who you want to work for, that is a bonus! Employers love to feel they are the preferred employer – the chosen one! Few want to be a stepping stone on your career path.

Having confidence in yourself comes from knowledge, experience, and expertise. Believe in yourself; yes, you can come across more positively - by updating your training or polishing up on areas in which you are less than confident.

Self-belief in its-self will not indicate arrogance. However, the way you project yourself in an interview can be arrogant if you are not careful.???

Try not to come over as superior or overbearing. Ask questions, and don't take things for granted. Self-entitled and presumptuous traits define arrogance.?

Make the recruiter feel important by using his name - not too often. Doing this correctly two or three times in conversation will help indicate what you think about him.

Perhaps we all have arrogant traits from time to time. However, it is best not to display them at all at an interview. People love to work with self-assured people but hate to work with those who are arrogant.

Don't put others down; value the recruiter's time and never make him feel that your time is more important than his.??

Don't brag!

Although the recruiter may ask you about your achievements, bragging is a blatant sign of cockiness. Your achievements may not have been possible without your team or management backup, so giving them some credit will probably go down well, more so if you trained them.

Never engage in one-upmanship. If congratulations are due to someone, give it pleasantly! Think about other people's feelings. The interviewer will not be happy if you tell him you could do his job.

Don't be pushy or rude. Before you leave an interview, always thank the recruiter for taking the time to see you. Tell him that you have learned much from the discussion and are still interested in the role; if you are - ask him when you can expect to hear back. Please send a brief courtesy letter or email after the interview to thank him for his time. We do include an after-interview email template with our CV Specialist writing services.??

Try to keep calm, no matter what happens. Some arrogant people have a short temper and will easily snap or talk down to you. If you are on the receiving side of this, you may want to think again about who you want to work for - however, do remember you may not be working alongside the person interviewing you. If you yourself are quick tempered, try and keep calm and collected.??

Don't overlook the receptionist! She can often be your best ally – never consider the receptionist to be in an inferior position; she may be the only contact you have before you and the recruiter.?

Adopt a growth mindset and consider other people's points of view.??

If the job turns out to be completely different from your expectations at an interview, be diplomatic – after all, you don't know where you will meet that recruiter again.?

Despite how the interview goes, leave it on a friendly note. Shake the recruiter's hand and thank him for his time. "I'm sorry, I don't want to waste your time but having learned more I don't think this role is for me" or "Having learned more about the role, I would be delighted to work for – said company; when can I expect to hear back?
