Interviewing is a Two-Way Street

Interviewing is a Two-Way Street

Interviewing with various companies can be a stressful time to say the least but are you getting the most out of your time with your potential future line manager?

So often we speak with candidates throughout their interview process, prepping them as best we can and providing as much insight as possible, but most candidates focus so hard on trying to predict what questions will come up that they forget to ask questions themselves. I mean would you buy a car without asking about its service history, previous owners etc??

Asking insightful questions during an interview not only helps you gauge if the company is the right fit for you but also demonstrates your interest and engagement. Here are some great questions to ask hiring managers during an interview:

About the Role

  • What are the most important skills or qualities needed to succeed in this role?
  • Can you describe the day-to-day responsibilities of this position?
  • How do you measure success in this role?
  • What are the most challenging aspects of this position?
  • Are there opportunities for growth or advancement within this role?

About the Team

  • Can you tell me more about the team I would be working with?
  • How would you describe the team dynamics?
  • What are the strengths of the current team members?
  • How does this team collaborate with other departments?
  • What is the leadership style of the person I would be reporting to?

About the Company Culture

  • How would you describe the company culture?
  • What are the company's core values, and how do they influence daily operations?
  • How does the company support work-life balance?
  • What initiatives does the company take to promote diversity and inclusion?

About the Company’s Future

  • What are the company’s short-term and long-term goals?
  • How does this role contribute to the company’s overall vision?
  • What are some of the biggest challenges facing the company right now?
  • How has the company evolved over the past few years?
  • What are the company’s plans for growth and innovation?

About Next Steps

  • What are the next steps in the interview process?
  • When do you expect to make a decision regarding the hiring for this role?
  • Is there anything else I should provide or clarify that would help with your decision?
  • What is the onboarding process like for new employees?
  • Can you share any insights on the feedback process here?

These questions not only give you valuable information but also help you stand out as a thoughtful and engaged candidate.

So, while prepping for that next interview, be sure to set some time aside to outline some questions you’d like answered, after all, this could end up being the place you spend 5 days a week in!
