Interviewing Tips

By Meghan Jarret (BestLogic Staffing Staff Member)

Interviewing is one of the most daunting processes to go through as a job applicant; however, it’s important to make a good first impression to potential employers. As an applicant, it’s important to set yourself apart from other candidates so that job recruiters pick you over the rest of the job pool. Unsure of how to make the most of your next interview? We have tips for you!

Before any job interview takes place, it’s important to research both the company and the position that you are applying for. In doing this, you’ll have a better understand of what the company stands for and what the job position is demands of you so that you can align your own values accordingly. Similarly, understanding the company’s mission can help you align your responses to interview questions that demonstrate you have done the research on the company and are actively practicing their core values, which will give you a leg up from other candidates.

Secondly, for any interview appearance is key. Because your appearance is the first notable aspect of any job applicant, it is important to dress accordingly. By dressing professionally, you are indicating that you are taking the interview seriously and are also respecting the professional environment that you are entering. Similarly, appearance flows into your body language during the interview. It is important to display positive body language such as smiling, nodding, and making eye contact with the whomever is conducting the job interview. Looking distracted and playing with the objects around you demonstrate negative body language that exhibit your disinterest in the interview being conducted. Similarly, you should demonstrate active listening and attentiveness so that you can make a good impression with the hiring manager.

Thirdly, showcase yourself. On top of demonstrating all of the necessary qualities of the position you are applying for, hiring managers want to hear about you. Showcase your achievements and accomplishments that gave you experience in the field. You want employers to see how valuable you would be on their team and how your experience would enhance the company as a whole.

Fourthly, it is crucial that you are prepared to ask good questions. Though applicants feel too timid to ask the hiring manager questions, it is important that you fully understand what the company is demanding and what they stand for, for example. By asking questions, you are demonstrating your interest in the company and what would be expected from you as an employee at that company. Some examples of questions to ask could along the lines of “How has your company handled the effects of COVID-19?” or “What are the types of projects I will be working on in this position?”

Finally, the last tip is to always follow up after a job interview within a 24-hour period. It’s important to thank the hiring manager for their time to meet with you and consider you as a candidate for that position. Similarly, the follow up message is another opportunity to summarize your strengths that you would provide in that position to remind the hiring manager how valuable you are even if you didn’t ace the interview at first.
