Interviewing: The Mindset, Prep, and Questions That Will Set You Apart

Interviewing: The Mindset, Prep, and Questions That Will Set You Apart

Have you ever felt that mix of excitement and terror before a big interview?

Yeah, that was me a year ago. I was applying for a consulting role—a significant career shift from human services—and the pressure was on. But I wasn't leaving it to chance. I had a game plan to turn the interview into a conversation.

It's unbelievable that I was interviewing for the company where I work this time last year. Fast-forward to today, and I'm thriving in my dream role.

So, what happened in between? A whole lot of strategy, a sprinkle of luck, and some interview tips I'm excited to share with you.

Here's how I landed the interview, nailed it, and got the job.

Interview Prep 101:

  1. Tailored Resume: I treated my resume like a chameleon, adapting it to highlight skills and experiences relevant to the job. Remember, honesty is essential! You don't need to fabricate anything. Frame your past achievements in a way that speaks to the new role and uses the same language they use on the job posting.
  2. Podcast Prep: I binge-listened to the Interview Boss podcast (seriously, it's gold!). The advice on handling tricky questions and projecting confidence was a game-changer.

Elevator Pitch

Picture this: you're in an elevator with your dream company's CEO. You've got seconds to make an impression. What do you say?

That, my friends, is your elevator pitch – your career's "highlight reel" condensed into a bite-sized soundbite. Think of it as a mini-marketing campaign for YOU.

It's all about nailing that first impression. You want to sum up your skills, experience, and passion in a way that's both memorable and intriguing. It's a teaser trailer for your professional life, designed to leave them wanting more.

So, what goes into a killer elevator pitch?

  • Start with a quick intro – your name, current role, or area of expertise.
  • Then, drop some stats – the projects you led, the results you delivered, the skills that make you unique. And don't forget to share your career goals!
  • Are you looking for a new challenge or a chance to make a more significant impact? Be clear about what you're seeking.

And remember, an elevator pitch isn't just about talking. It's about sparking a conversation. So, end with a question that invites them to learn more. Think of it as your call to action.

It might sound simple, but crafting a compelling elevator pitch takes practice, as does rehearsing enough time to say it confidently. Trust me, it's worth it.

10 Common Interview Questions You Need to Prepare For:

  1. Tell me about yourself.
  2. Why are you interested in this position/company?
  3. Could you tell me what your strengths/weaknesses are?
  4. Could you describe a time you faced a challenge and how you overcame it?
  5. What are your salary expectations?
  6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  7. Why should we hire you?
  8. What is your management style?
  9. How do you handle stress and pressure?
  10. Do you have any questions for us?

SAR Examples (Get Specific!):

This is your interview, BFF! Prepare for common questions by outlining the Situation, Action, and Result of your past successes. Practice these responses until they flow naturally.

Always keep your answers concise and focused - 2 minutes max. Remember, they are interviewing many candidates, so stand out and do it quickly.

  • Situation: "In my previous role, our team faced a major project delay due to unforeseen technical issues."
  • Action: "I took the initiative to organize daily progress meetings, reallocate resources, and communicate transparently with stakeholders."
  • Result: "We not only caught up but delivered the project ahead of the revised deadline, exceeding client expectations."

Unexpected Questions? No Sweat!

Let's be honest. Not every question can be anticipated.

But you can adapt and respond confidently if you know your strengths and have a bank of success stories (using the SAR method!).

Show Up Like You Already Belong:

This is where mindset matters! Even if you're transitioning careers, project the confidence of someone already crushing it in that role.

How? Research the company thoroughly and mention specific details you found intriguing. This shows you're prepared and genuinely interested.

Ask Thoughtful Questions:

Remember, interviews are a two-way street. Ask questions that show you've done your homework and are genuinely considering whether this is the right fit for YOU.

Generic questions? Boring! Go deeper and spark a genuine conversation.

Additional Tips:

  • Practice your body language: Eye contact, posture, and a genuine smile can go a long way.
  • Test your equipment: If you are online, ensure access to the video conference, your camera and speaker are working, do an internet speed test, and check your lighting and background.
  • Dress for success: Look sharp and professional, but let your personality shine.
  • Send a thank-you note: A quick email expressing gratitude for the interview is a classy move.

Remember, interviews don't have to be terrifying. You can shine and land that dream job with the proper preparation and mindset.
