Interviewing GPTs on Digital Twins and Their Future

In October 2019, as a favor to an executive ( Joe Schechter ), I sat on a panel to discuss AI at Tulane University which was attended by students, parents, and media. On the panel were a data scientist building virtual reality training for safety during disasters ( Soundar Anbalagan ), the new head of education innovation at Dell, and myself. Weeks before the panel, Microsoft had just run into issues of bias in its conversational AIs. We were asked the question, “Can we remove bias from an AI and if not, then what?

Having thought about this and recently toyed with conversational AIs and other learning AI models ( Sam Gross ), I answered “no” and proposed something different. Rather than try to build the perfect AI, why don’t we consider every form of bias a unique perspective or a different frame of context that provides a focused expert point of view which can be expressed or detect things like it (the old adage "it takes one to know one comes to mind").

Imagine you are the President of a country and multiple issues are taking place simultaneously. Supplementing the heads of agencies are AI’s that look at these multiple perspectives. In the heat of a crisis, each AI provides its take on environmental, economic, sociological, food supply, infrastructure, et cetera… AIs can be great intelligent sensors of patterns. Having heard the answers, the President then directs the AIs to find the best course of action that meets various perspectives, goals and ethical concerns. You could literally hear “the gears turning” in the audience as they envisioned a board room, mixed with leaders and AIs.

Now four years later, large language models (LLM) and GPT demonstrate huge advances and flexibility in synthesizing responses, albeit they still need error checking. Let’s remember that we’ve already lived through multiple years of SIRI or Alexa, or Wikis giving us not so favorable nor truthful answers. ?So I decided to assemble my own panel using ChatGPT 3.5 and 4.0. I also encountered an interesting project at You.com that is trying to preserve sourcing. Here are the different perspectives observed following a line of inquiry about Digital Twins.?

In my own words and in closing, what sent me down this road was a recent integration created by my company, edgeTI. It enables business operations and systems to utilize GPT by threading queries and responses inside work instructions and communications — all without modifying the participating software or service. In fact, several GPT threads and different models could be interrogated based on different knowledge sets like public, industry, and private just like we did above or mix generative sources with traditional knowledge.
