Very few companies train their technical staff on interviewing skills and rarely do companies spend their efforts in training interviewers as Employer Brand Ambassadors.

So what is expected to be done to use interviews as a medium to boost the company's image and brand?

Is company and HR aware of the company's brand proposition as an EMPLOYER?

  • If that is not clear, it needs to be done. Candidates give high value to the company's brand as an employer apart from other factors.
  • Train all the interviewers or in fact all contact points about what employer brand propositions the company wants to project to the candidates.
  • Have posters in the interview room showcasing stories reflecting the company's values and culture ( Employer Brand).
  • In case of an online interview, an interview invitation mail/message should have links to these stories related to the employer brand.
  • Interviewers should reflect the Employer Brand Propositions ( EBP) in their conduct. e.g. if Respect for all is a value that the company, the interviewer's conduct and way of asking questions, sharing the process of the interview, eye-to-eye contact, creating a safe space for the candidate to be comfortable, acknowledging the discomfort of candidates and helping him/her feel relaxed, summarising the interview proceedings, etc will give a true picture of company's culture of respect for all (and therefore boosting company's brand).
  • Interweaving small anecdotes about the company's way of problem-solving, how it encourages experimentation without fear of failure and provides equal opportunity to all without hierarchy in solution designing, etc are some of the things interviewers can do to promote the employer brand of the company.

Always remember Interview is a two-way process and the candidate is assessing the company as a prospective employer during the interview process. So Interviewers should be careful in their behaviour and messaging during interview process.
