Interview that we can all learn from...

I had the chance to talk to one of my friends today. He is in leadership with a team of Realtors here in Ohio and I thought I would share a few of his answers from our conversation. I am not going to say who he is, but he leads the Central Ohio office for a team that closed over 1000 homes in Ohio last year.

Question 1: How is business in this tough time?

"Well our overall team is up almost 20% in volume closed and pending year to date so I have to say business is really good. Columbus is tough... not enough inventory but our average sale price and number of listings is climbing quickly and I expect us to beat last year by a significant amount despite the pandemic and economy."

Question 2: How are you up in a market that is way down? What is the secret?

"Well I think it is 3 things really. First we were prepared with technology (video, virtual tours, social media, remote paperwork and more) so it was an easy transition for us to adapt to the virus and lock down. Second I think we actually had a plan to do business during these times. When many agents said they had masks we were able to show buyers and sellers a step by step plan to do business while keeping people safe. Last and most important would have to be our team kept working through this and did not give up, did not buy into all the negativity and stayed focus."

Question 3: If you could give 1 piece of advice to other business leaders what would it be?

"Simply put it would be KEEP WORKING. I believe in great chaos is great opportunity and this is a time to grab market share, grow your business while competitors are struggling and use your leadership skills to keep your business focused and productive."

Question 4: Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the next 6 months?

"I am very optimistic about the real estate market for certain. Other industries, especially restaurants and entertainment are going to have a hell of a time but we can all push through this if we stay focused. There will definitely be a higher unemployment rate but I thin a large percentage of people will return to work and be ok. Look at job search websites and there are huge numbers of legitimate jobs being advertised. In real estate we are having record months so I feel great there. I believe that overall we will be good and emerge from this."

Question 5: What worries you?

"I am very worried about a second shut down if we see spikes in the virus. I believe our economy was so strong we will survive what we have been through but a second shutdown will be far more destructive. I worry about people and how they are becoming more angry and aggressive on social media and in person. When people are getting shot over mask policies we have gone to far. I hope that people choose to be decent human beings and pull together... we need to focus on getting through this and not politicizing everything."

Question 6: What gives you the most hope?

"Small business has always been such a key part of our economy and this virus has done nothing to kill the spirit of small business owners. Yes, some will close but the reality is if they did not have reserves they were on the edge anyway. I have faith that a lot of businesses will adapt and thrive.

It is good to hear someone who is upbeat and doing well through this. Hope this lifts you up a little.. I know it did me.
