Interview Tips - Preparing Yourself

Interviews can be daunting and a nerve wracking experience for most people regardless of the amount of experience you have.

You've already done so well to get to the interview stage - the market for the majority of industries is highly competitive and each new opening will likely to have high volumes of applicants.

Here are a few tips to help make you become as prepared as possible

Preparing yourself

Before the?interview, make sure you have all of the information you need ahead of the day:

  • Where will it be held?
  • How long will it last?
  • What format will it take?
  • Will there be any tests or group exercises?
  • Do I need to bring or prepare anything specific?
  • Double check the date and time of the interview
  • Check your journey ahead of time to see how long it will roughly take you (and then add 20/30 minutes on top of this in case there are any unplanned distributions or traffic that will impact your journey)

What to take

There are a few things that are always useful to take with you on an interview even if not required:

  • A form of ID – Some offices/sites may need to see this for you to enter
  • A notepad and pen
  • A printed copy of your CV – if you are being interviewed by more than one person print multiple copies. It’s more than likely your interviewer will have this already but it makes you look prepared and efficient
  • A copy of the job specification – you may want to refer to this to ask questions

What to wear

You want to present yourself in the best possible light and first impressions count:

  • Smart dress is always best for an interview – ensure your outfit is ironed and looks presentable
  • If in doubt, you can get advice from your recruitment consultant if using one or your point of contact from the organisation.
  • If you are attending during or straight from work and will be wearing a uniform or your dress code is casual let them know ahead of time – this usually won’t be an issue but will ensure you are not judged negatively for it.
  • If your interview is via an online platform, please still put in the effort to dress smartly and also double check what’s in the background of your camera

Some good tips in there Jade Arden. Sharing for my network. My experience echoes yours. Nothing can be more frustrating for all involved when you know the candidate interviewing has not given their best. Especially in our industry, it's a small world so even more important candidates do their prep and put their best foot forward.
