Interviewing, for any management position, needs to be treated very differently than to an entry-level application.
Ensure you can answer these, and back them up, with a resounding yes, when it comes to your skill set:
1. Can you delegate?
It is not everyone’s cup of tea, and most would prefer to do the tasks themselves, but in a management position, you need to delegate, and delegate well.
It is all fine and well giving out tasks willy-nilly, but not following up in a systematic manner, can prove to be hazardous. In addition, certain tasks suit certain people and knowing who should be doing what, is paramount to your manager role. A big part of delegation is being very clear with your instructions. The brief needs to lay out exactly what they need to do, by when, and how.
2. Can you handle the tough and uncomfortable moments?
There will always be moments, when dealing with people, where you would rather just not. Knowing how to handle a difficult employee, sort out an awkward incident, or a make a tough decision, is all part of being manager.
3. Do you know how to grow your staff?
You need to be a leader, and leaders grow, so in turn, they help their subordinates grow too. Training and retaining go hand in hand, so having a plan to develop your staff within the company, and keep them happy, will be seen as real plus.
4. Are you able to motivate your team?
Everyone needs to be motivated at some point or another. Not everyone wants to be motivated in the same way, so knowing what makes others tick, is a skill set all managers need to learn. Will you use incentives? Will you be creative with this, and if so, how?
5. Can you communicate well with others?
Sitting behind your big, busy desk will not go down well in the corporate world. Yes, there are emails, Skype, WhatsApp, and many other forms of non-physical communication, but the best is face-to-face. So, be sure you are able to engage with your staff, and get your message across, without being condescending or negative.
There is a time and place for everything. Knowing how and when to make the most of your management role, is key to sealing the interview.
