Meet Tessa Hughes , Chief Technology Officer for the Public Safety Group at Sopra Steria .
?How did you get into tech??
I’ve always been interested in technology. My father was a Software Developer, and so I’ve grown up around computers. At school I had the opportunity to do Media Studies at GCSE and built a website for my coursework. During that coursework I knew that I wanted to remain working in computing. I completed a BSc in Media Lab Arts and then started as a junior developer on the graduate scheme at Sopra Steria and have been working here ever since (18 years and counting!).??
I love seeing how technology can support and solve problems to make people's lives easier, and that’s what I strive to achieve in my role as the Public Safety Group Chief Technology Officer.??
?Can you share your personal experiences navigating the digital career landscape? What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them??
Navigating the technology industry as a female has posed significant challenges, including feelings of inadequacy and a persistent imposter syndrome. Often being the only woman in the room, I frequently questioned my place and abilities within the industry. However, in 2020, I seized the opportunity to pursue a master's degree, believing it would be a way to prove my worthiness for a leadership role in technology. Graduating with a distinction, I gained a new perspective on my capabilities. Additionally, participating in an Emerging Leaders course at Sopra Steria taught me the importance of authenticity in leadership. This experience empowered me to confidently embrace my true self rather than emulating my male counterparts, ultimately solidifying my confidence in my professional journey.?
?How much do you think the industry has changed since you joined??
I've been working in the technology industry since 2006, and the changes have been immense. These changes are not only in terms of technological innovation but also in processes. The adoption of Agile methodologies, DevOps principles, and automated testing are just a few advancements that have significantly enhanced the Software Development Cycle.??
When it comes to technology, cloud-based solutions, automation, and AI have revolutionised our approach to technology solutions. However, the fundamental question remains the same: what problem are we trying to solve? We then determine which technology best meets the requirements, whether it's cutting-edge or traditional and proven.??
Every industry experiences changes, and it's crucial to stay engaged and continuously develop your skills to keep up.?
?Have you encountered any unconscious biases or stereotypes in your digital career journey, and how did you address or challenge them??
Over the years, I've encountered unconscious bias and stereotypes on several occasions. Early in my career, I visited a customer site as a developer to address some technology challenges, but I was assumed to be the PA. While there's nothing wrong with being a PA, this assumption highlighted a stereotype that I couldn't be technical. This initial reaction, I believe, sparked my journey with imposter syndrome.?
During my time at Sopra Steria, I've worked hard to prove myself as a valuable team member. However, I've still faced pushback and comments about being "good for inclusivity numbers." These remarks are always difficult to hear and reinforce my feelings of not deserving my position and being an imposter.?
When such comments are made, I challenge them and explain how they make me feel. I think people often underestimate the impact of their words. I may never fully feel like I belong and might always feel like an imposter, but I've started to embrace it. I focus on developing myself and those around me to counter any stereotypes or bias.?
?What initiative or programme from your organisation on diversity and inclusion would you like to spotlight??
I would like to highlight the Women's Inclusive Network at Sopra Steria, which provides a platform for discussing issues related to women in our industry. It’s incredibly important to support these initiatives to break down bias and create a more inclusive and diverse workplace.??
The network organises events and hosts speakers to offer insights on various topics. They also sponsor the Inspiring Women’s Awards, an incredible initiative that uplifts women and showcases their value and worth in the business.??
A couple of years ago, I was fortunate to be nominated and win one of their awards. It was a privilege to be nominated alongside some incredible women across the business.?
?What advice would you give to aspiring professionals who are looking to work in the tech sector??
The advice I would give is to never stop learning. The tech industry is constantly evolving, and so should you. It's an exciting place to work, and embracing change is key to success.?
It's also important to remember that soft skills are just as crucial as hard skills for professional success.?
I would also recommend that aspiring professionals seek out a mentor to support their career and personal development plans. This will help them learn the skills required to progress on their desired career path.?
Finally, I would advise them to be their authentic selves. Trying to be something you are not is exhausting.?
