The Interview Questions Candidates Most Desire?
May 30, 2024
A recent survey by staffing provider Yoh highlights the interview questions that job candidates are most eager to answer. The poll, which engaged 2,084 participants aged 18 and older, reveals that 54% of respondents favor being asked, "What do you think makes you a good candidate for this job?"
Additional popular questions include:
- "What soft skills (e.g., adaptability, conflict resolution, problem-solving) do you possess that would make you a good candidate for this job?" selected by 46%.
- "What did you like most about your last job?" chosen by 45%.
- "What is an accomplishment (personal or professional) you are proud of and why?" picked by 44%.
Emmett McGrath, president of Yoh, emphasizes the importance of strategic question selection in interviews, especially given current talent shortages. "Interviews are a critical component of the hiring process. It's crucial for hiring managers to balance traditional, effective questions with innovative queries that challenge candidates' creativity and problem-solving skills," McGrath explained.
The survey also identified key themes that resonate with job seekers:
- Positivity in Questioning: Candidates prefer questions that are framed positively. For instance, 45% appreciated being asked about what they liked most about their previous job, rather than what they disliked.

- Adversity Discussions: Many candidates, especially those from minority backgrounds, are interested in discussing how they've handled challenging situations. Notably, 51% of Hispanic respondents wanted to be asked about managing high-stress situations.
- Thoughtful Discussion of Accomplishments: About 44% of participants, particularly those who are older, affluent, and better educated, preferred to discuss their significant achievements.
?However, certain questions were less favored:
- Needs and Wants: Only 24% of respondents were interested in articulating their job non-negotiables, and 27% wanted to discuss necessary resources for their next position.
- Hypotheticals: Questions about hypothetical scenarios, such as career choices if money were no object, were less appealing, with interest declining among older age groups.
?This survey, conducted from March 12 to March 14, offers valuable insights for enhancing interview strategies and better engaging potential candidates.
I am sharing this post to highlight an important observation: many job interviews lack structure, which can lead to a less than optimal experience for both the candidate and the interviewer. As a search firm, we've noticed that the onboarding process for many companies often lacks clear guidelines. By being better prepared for your interview, you can help navigate the process more effectively, making it a better experience for both parties.

If you find yourself struggling with nervousness and anxiety during interviews, it's often because you might be overthinking the process and relying on outdated habits that influenced your past responses. What worked previously might not be effective now. Being well-prepared can significantly increase your chances of advancing to the next round of interviews. A common obstacle we observe is a lack of self-confidence. Other issues may include self-defeating thoughts, such as feeling inadequate because you didn't attend a top university or doubting your own capabilities. These concerns can heavily impact your mindset. Therefore, it's crucial to relax, clear your mind, and focus on your Features, Advantages, and Benefits (FAB) to present your best self-confidently.
