Interview Preparation Using the KISS Principle

Interview Preparation Using the KISS Principle

The KISS Principle: "Keep it Simple, Stupid".

This age old adage can apply to many processes in our lives, with interview preparation being just one of them!

If it has been some time since you have presented for a job interview then keeping things simple when it comes to preparation will assist in keeping those nerves in check.

Essentially, an interview of 45-60 minutes' duration can be broken down into three main sections, with each section typically covering / exploring the following:

Section One

  • Opportunity for candidate to introduce themselves and provide a brief career overview.
  • Explores candidate’s knowledge of the organization.
  • Candidate’s motivation in applying for the role.
  • Candidate’s strengths, skills, capabilities, and experiences that most pertain to the role.
  • Knowledge of role, industry, and future trends
  • Potential areas of challenge for the candidate
  • Candidate's self awareness - areas for potential improvement

Section Two

Questions that ask for the candidate to provide practical examples of how they have previously demonstrated the main competencies required for the role.

For example with a leadership role, questions could focus on key capabilities such as:

  • Leadership
  • Managing change
  • Strategy Implementation
  • Reporting to Board
  • Administration and Financial / Business acumen
  • Stakeholder Relations
  • Advocacy

Section Three

  • Explores the candidate’s values to ensure alignment with those of the organization.
  • Provides an opportunity for the candidate to give their “elevator pitch” or to succinctly summarise why they are the best candidate for the role.
  • Opportunity for the candidate to ask questions to the Interviewer / Panel.
  • Provide the candidate with information regarding next steps in the process.
  • Conclude Interview

Good luck!
