Let's Dive In!
Interview with Mozaic CEO Marcus Cobb
Alan Soclof: Hi Marcus! Thank you for taking the time to connect. First and foremost, congratulations on the fundraising announcement. We at Volition could not be more excited to partner with you and the Mozaic team.?
Marcus Cobb: Thank you Alan, and it is great to be here. The Mozaic team is very excited as well.?
Alan Soclof: Starting off, how would you describe Mozaic and your platform??
Marcus Cobb: So, Mozaic is a global payments platform making multi-party payouts seamless and automated for the creator economy and beyond. Our proprietary tech architecture ingests sales reports/invoices, calculates each party’s owed amount, and pushes payments directly to bank accounts, therefore, removing manual calculations and third-party payment platforms. The journey with Mozaic really began simply from our curiosity as technology entrepreneurs and reading about how songwriters and collaborators, simply put, were not being paid for their work. What other industry was there where people would not get paid for their work? Musicians and collaborators in the music space were using excel or other ad-hoc mechanisms for payments. We knew there was a serious opportunity here. Then, during COVID, we saw the rise of the creator economy which helped us grow from outside the music industry to industries like gaming, YouTube creators, etc. People were building businesses around their passions, and they were doing it with a team. This gave us the opportunity to step on the gas and really become the Venmo for teams.?
Alan Soclof: The music industry and greater creator economy is known to be a difficult space to break into and become a meaningful player in. How has Mozaic become deeply integrated in this ecosystem?
Marcus Cobb: I think there are a couple things that come to mind. First and foremost, when looking to build our product and platform, we prioritized lessons from the great designers and companies over the years. The best products are extraordinarily complex behind the scenes, but from a consumer perspective, have a simple interface. Apple did this the best with the iPhone and their products. We think the sophisticated backend of the Mozaic platform along with the intuitive interface has really helped us break into various industries and succeed. Specifically, when it comes to the music industry, this is a space I have worked in for a very long time and have built a plethora of meaningful and strong relationships. This partnered with my 20+ years of experience as a technology founder and executive was a powerful combination to ultimately create Mozaic and see meaningful success in this space.?
Alan Soclof: Why did you choose Volition to be your capital partner??
Marcus Cobb: There are a couple key reasons that we ultimately decided to work with Volition. First, it is clear that Volition leads with people – something that I believe in as well and is a core principle at Mozaic. Every interaction I have had with the Volition team has been great. We actually had six competing term sheet offers either on deck or coming in the door when we were talking with Volition.?The day after our first call with Volition, the Volition team was already on a plane to Chicago. Simply put, no one hit the pavement like Volition and it was not really close. This gritty, hardworking energy that Volition has aligns with mine and Mozaic’s DNA perfectly. What I also really liked about Volition was that they have made investments across a variety of industries and verticals. Whether it being cellular companies, designer toothbrushes, pet commerce or no code CRM, I can’t wait to connect and learn from some of the other portfolio CEOs as we at Mozaic look to grow.?
Alan Soclof: Thanks for the time Marcus and have a great holiday season!?
Marcus Cobb: Thank you Alan! You too.?
