Interview Like a Pro: Unique Tips

Interview Like a Pro: Unique Tips

You all know I'm all about helping you stand out in your career, and this week, we're diving into the heart of the matter: the job interview.

You've probably heard all the generic advice: "Dress professionally," "Research the company," "Practice your answers." But what if you could go beyond the basics and actually wow recruiters?

Last week, we talked about how LinkedIn is a powerful tool for career growth , and this week, we're bringing that same level of strategy to your interview prep.

Let's face it: interviews can be nerve-wracking. But what if you could enter that room (or Zoom call) with confidence and clarity, knowing that you're equipped with unique strategies to stand out?

That's exactly what we're going to cover today. I'm going to share some interview hacks I've learned over the years, directly from a recent conversation I had with my private mentorship group, Career Catalyst.

Here's what we discussed:

The Interview Isn't About You (It's About Them)

The most important shift in mindset is understanding that interviews are about how you can solve the company's problems. It's not about listing off your accomplishments; it's about demonstrating the value you bring.

Turning the "Tell Me About Yourself" Question into an Opportunity

This question can feel like a dreaded icebreaker, but it's a chance to make a powerful first impression. Here's how to approach it:

  • Summarize Your Past: In one sentence, highlight the benefit you've consistently brought to past companies. (Example: "I've spent 15 years as a glue that holds companies together, acting as a skilled executive assistant and office manager, ensuring smooth operations.")
  • Focus on the Present: Share what you're currently doing, emphasizing your impact. (Example: "I'm currently job searching, looking for a company where I can help build a thriving, organized environment.")
  • Highlight Your Goal: Briefly mention a future goal or how your values align with the company's. (Example: "I'm passionate about [company value] and eager to learn how I can contribute to your mission.")

What to Do When You're Interviewed by Someone You've Worked with Before

Let's be honest, awkward situations happen. If you're interviewed by someone you've had a less-than-stellar experience with in the past, stay positive and avoid negativity.

  • Keep It Professional: Use a positive tone and focus on your memories of working with them.
  • Relate to the Company's Mission: Frame your reasons for leaving in a way that highlights your alignment with the company you're interviewing at.
  • Change the Subject: Gently steer the conversation towards the company and how you can contribute to their success.

The Power of Thank You Videos

We're all about making a memorable impression. Send a thank you video after your interview using Loom or another similar tool.

  • Keep it Brief: Less than 45 seconds is ideal.
  • Express Gratitude: Thank them for their time and reiterate your excitement about the role.
  • Don't Be Afraid to Be Authentic: Your personality shines through.

Leveraging AI to Your Advantage

We're living in a world where AI is changing everything. Use it to your advantage:

  • Learn to Use AI Tools: Familiarize yourself with AI tools like Perplexity, Chat GPT, Gemini, and Llama.
  • Showcase Your AI Savvy: Mention your AI skills on your resume or in an interview.
  • Use AI for Research: Perplexity can help you find information on the company, its mission statement, and even average salary ranges.

Addressing the "Greatest Weakness" Question

This is a classic interview question, and there's a smart way to handle it:

  • Choose a Weakness Not Related to the Job: Avoid stating weaknesses that would directly impact your ability to perform the role.
  • Frame It Positively: Instead of saying "My greatest weakness is...", say "I'm actively working to improve my [skill]..."
  • Show Growth: Explain how you're working on that area and mention any positive feedback you've received.

Preparing for an In-Person Interview

Long interviews can be intimidating. Here's how to be prepared:

  • Research the Interview Panel: Find each person on LinkedIn and note down personalized questions to ask.
  • Bring Your Resume and Notes: Having these handy will help you stay focused.
  • Ask Specific Questions: Show your engagement by asking questions tailored to each interviewer's background.

Questions to Ask at the End of the Interview

The interview is a two-way street. Use your final questions to gauge if the role is a good fit for you.

  • Ask About Challenges and Success: Inquire about the biggest challenges of the role, what success looks like, and what strengths they value in their team.
  • Focus on Company Stability: Ask about the company's future outlook, growth plans, and any recent changes that might impact the position.

That's an incredibly noteworthy and thorough Experience. In terms of design, I think it's nice to see a verbosely tended expert and unusually intentioned. My resumes are unusual and quite unique in a similar sensibility as your stylization choices. Nice long reads too. Very underappreciated these days.
