Celebrating women in asset management this Women's History Month is an important way to recognize the incredible contributions of women in the industry. To find out more about the industry and how young women can get into asset management, we had the privilege of interviewing Kalinka Dyankova, Senior Fund Analyst at Kleinwort Hambros. Kalinka has a wealth of experience, and she is eager to share her knowledge and insights to help others break into the industry.
How did you get into the industry?
I have always wanted to work in finance but was not quite sure in which part of the market. I was on vacation in France, when I decided to move there and do my higher education. 6 years and two master’s degrees later, I ended up in investment banking working on securitisation deals. Just a few years later and after the financial crisis, hiring and getting a full-time position was extremely hard, it was a difficult situation at the time. It taught me one very valuable lesson: choose an industry where no matter what the market environment is, you can recycle your skill set and still find a job.
While both investment banking and asset management are contingent on economic cycles, asset management is impacted to a smaller extend by a global economic downturn.
What do you love about being in this industry?
Asset Management is a very diverse industry creating multiple opportunities. With asset management, you have a career that places you at the epicenter of global events. As a result, every day is different and global news directly impacts your working week.
The industry is not limited to one niche area of expertise. Although there is the opportunity to work closely with clients in a specific sector, asset management always requires the broad perspective. This ensures that you never get bored and the range of roles you could move on to is always going to be diverse.

Although many people overlook this aspect of asset management, it does have a social purpose, that an investment bank role may not offer. Saving is crucial for the future of individuals and for society as a whole – asset management plays a key role in ensuring that there are investment products to enable this and that they perform well.
How do you think young woman can also get into the industry?
Be curious and fearless, there is a place for everyone. Enjoy what you do, and it will reflect in your work.
In Asset Management, professionals are more often tasked with the technical work of managing clients' portfolios. People skills are important, as clients want to be comfortable with the person managing their money, therefore it is important to develop good interpersonal skills along with the technical aspect of the role.
It is clear that Kalinka is a valuable asset in the industry, her knowledge and experience is sure to have a lasting impact. We look forward to seeing more of her work. Follow our page to stay up-to-date on all the exciting content we have planned.

1 年I love that women in the industry also get recognised, asset management can sometimes still be so male dominated!
Evie Ratnaventhan I also like "People skills are important, as clients want to be comfortable with the person managing their money, therefore it is important to develop good interpersonal skills along with the technical aspect of the role." For Sure!
