Welcome to "In Their Shoes," where we explore the experiences of students navigating the professional world. Today, we feature Justin Onuoha , a @Tomley Grammar Sixth Form student who will soon start his new role as an 汇丰 Degree Apprentice. Justin shares his journey, highlighting the challenges and triumphs he encountered while pursuing the apprenticeship and offering valuable advice to fellow students.
1.????? Could you share a pivotal moment when you decided to pursue an apprenticeship and what factors influenced your decision?
I decided to pursue an apprenticeship after attending an insight event hosted by Bloomberg in October. This was the first time I truly understood what apprenticeships were. During the event, I listened to a panel of apprentices who shared their experiences, comparing apprenticeships with graduate roles and university education. They discussed the benefits and some disadvantages of being an apprentice. I realized that an apprenticeship suited me more, offering a more streamlined path to achieving my career aspirations in the FinTech industry. It was clear to me that an apprenticeship would allow me to start my career early and gain a head start compared to my peers. This insight convinced me that pursuing an apprenticeship was the best way to achieve my career goals.
2.????? Did you only apply for apprenticeship in the finance sector, or did you explore any other sectors?
I primarily applied for apprenticeships in the technology and finance sectors because of my strong interest in FinTech. For example, I applied for data analyst positions at KPMG and roles at PwC Technology. I also applied to various finance apprenticeships at banks like HSBC and Lloyds, as well as technology roles at companies like Jaguar Land Rover. I regret not exploring apprenticeships outside these sectors, as it might have broadened my chances of receiving more offers. However, in the end, focusing on these sectors was worth it because it aligned with my career goals.

3.????? What did you learn during the application process?
During the application process, I learned several valuable skills and lessons. One key skill was researching firms effectively. I discovered that having commercial knowledge about the industry and understanding what each firm does, especially the specific role I was applying for, was crucial. I became efficient at creating fact files with essential information about firms, which helped me during interviews.
A significant lesson I learned was to be myself in every interview. It’s important not to try to be a different person for each firm. Instead, I focused on exemplifying the values that firms look for, such as collaboration, integrity, teamwork, and communication. Using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure my answers helped me showcase my skills and experiences effectively. Practising the STAR method made it easier to tell my story naturally.
Another important lesson was to stay composed during interviews. It’s normal to feel nervous, but it’s essential to control your emotions and speak clearly. Techniques like drinking water or taking a deep breath can help manage nervousness and maintain composure during interviews.
4.????? Can you tell me about the fact files you created and where you found them?
I created my own fact files by talking to apprentices, researching online, and compiling information about the roles and firms. These fact files included commercial knowledge about the finance and tech industries, recent news related to the firms, and details about their core values and what they look for in candidates. Additionally, I found fact files on social media, particularly TikTok, where other apprentices shared their experiences and provided concise fact files for various firms. These resources were incredibly helpful and improved my own fact files.

5.????? What aspect of the industry are you most excited to explore during your apprenticeship?
I am most excited to explore the different sectors within HSBC's wealth and personal banking program. The program allows apprentices to rotate through various areas, such as insurance, asset management, and global private banking. This rotation will enable me to gain a broad range of skills and experiences, work with different teams, and learn from professionals in the industry. Meeting new people and understanding what the industry is truly like will be invaluable. I am particularly interested in global private banking, where I can work with high-profile clients and assist with their financial needs and philanthropic efforts.
6.????? How have attending events organised by Young Professionals helped you in your professional journey?
Attending events organised by Young Professionals has significantly improved my communication abilities and helped me build essential skills for my career. These events often feature speakers who are current apprentices or graduates, providing insights into what it’s like to work in specific roles. Participating in activities, such as group presentations, has taught me how to collaborate with new people and work on projects effectively. These experiences have prepared me for the corporate environment, where teamwork and meeting new people are common.
7.????? What advice would you give to other students interested in pursuing apprenticeships in finance or FinTech?
My advice to other students is to start as early as possible. Begin researching and understanding the roles and industry you are interested in. Attend events and gain experiences through small work opportunities. Apply to as many apprenticeships as you can, ensuring each application is of high quality. Networking is crucial—use LinkedIn to connect with people in the industry, seek advice from current apprentices or professionals, and learn from their experiences. Building a network can provide valuable insights and increase your chances of success.
8.????? What are your long-term career goals, and how do you envision apprenticeships helping you achieve them?
My long-term career goal is to secure a full-time role at a financial firm like HSBC, with career progression leading to a position in global private banking. I also aspire to bring innovative ideas to the firm. The apprenticeship will provide me with the skills and experiences needed to stand out and achieve these goals. Additionally, I want to give back by mentoring others, just as many professionals have guided me. Sharing my knowledge and experiences can help future apprentices succeed in their careers.
9.????? Is there anything you would like to share?
I would like to emphasize the importance of being prepared for the challenges of pursuing a degree apprenticeship. Time management is crucial, especially during busy periods like year 13. Balancing revision for A-levels and completing apprenticeship applications requires dedication and organization. Allocate specific time slots for applications and stay committed to each process, even if it takes hours. Developing strong time management skills will help you succeed in both your studies and apprenticeship applications.
