Interview with a Joules Work Experience Student - Part 2: Freya!

Dive into Life at Joules with our second interview of the series with Freya - our most recent work experience guest at The Barn!

Hi Freya! So, why have you chosen to complete your work Experience at Joules?

I chose Joules because I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of how a fashion Brand goes through the process of developing a clothing item/ accessory that both fits with the Brand's aesthetic and appeals to their customers. It made sense to go with Joules for this experience because they have such a strong Brand identity and image. Exciting!

This is so lovely to hear, thank you! What have you been up to whist at The Barn?

I've completed many tasks across each department, including research projects into popular trends and how other similar brands are including these trends within their markets. I've also created some hand painted designs for the Print Team!

Sounds so insightful! Which department have you most enjoyed spending time with and why?

Personally, my favourite departments to work in were Print and Knitwear. I had gone into this experience not really considering these as areas I would be interested in studying because I never really knew what the jobs included, however, I was pleasantly surprised with how interesting and diverse they were. It definitely helped me to realise I would be better suited to role in Creative!

Your hand painted designs are beautiful! What has surprised?you the most about The Barn?

From day one, I've been pleasantly surprised at how lovely the building is! The Barn is a light, open and inviting place to work, not only because of the building but also because the people working at Joules make it such a wonderful place to work! On my first day, I was so nervous to start without knowing anyone I would be working with, however, those nerves quickly vanished as soon as I started talking to the staff. No matter which department I was working in, everyone was so incredibly welcoming and made me feel a part of the team!

This is so lovely to hear Freya, thank you! I'm curious to know if you've spotted any products that you've fallen in love with? Which are they?

I have to say that my favourite item on has to be the “Jonty Navy Intarsia Knit Jumper”! I love the mix of blue and pink, I was immediately drawn to it!'

Great choice Freya! Finally, if you could share 3 top tips for anyone else looking to do work experience?at Joules, what would they be?

Number 1: Venture outside of your comfort zone. If the department you are working with suggests a task for you to complete and you aren’t sure how to do it, give it a go anyway and don’t be afraid to ask questions! My week with Joules was a massive learning experience because I got to use and learn a plethora of new skills!
Number 2: Work in as many Departments as possible! Like I said, I went into the experience never really considering Print and Knitwear as options to study/ pursue a career in, however, by the end of the week they were my favourite departments!
Number 3: Use the opportunity to get to know how the staff have gotten to the job role they are currently in. As someone who has just finished my A levels, I found it really interesting to find out the different pathways that people from each Department had studied at University and jobs they previously held. Everyone was really happy to share useful advice on what would be the best route for me to take!

Thank you so much Freya, this has been so insightful and I'm delighted to hear that you've had an exciting, varied and valuable week with us here at The Barn!

Head back here this time next week for our 3rd interview in the series with Alice who was lucky enough to join the Marketing Team at the Burghley Horse Trials!
