Interview Hack: Power Posing Your Confidence
You might think holding a power pose is something mainly to do with how others see your posture. But while that may be partially true, holding power poses goes much deeper and directly impacts your body – resulting in more confidence and feeling powerful.
So what exactly is a power pose and what are the best ways to implement this confidence boost??
Power posing was made famous by Amy Cuddy, a psychologist and Harvard professor. Her studies have shown people who sat in power poses for a few minutes felt more powerful than those who hadn’t and potentially holding power poses can increase the body’s testosterone while lowering cortisol. This means you won’t just appear more confident in your next interview but you’ll actually feel and be more confident too. Today this field of study is called postural feedback.
In order to power pose, think of expansive body postures – most famously like the hands on hips Superman and Superwoman above. You can also try raising your hands up wide above your head, or interlacing your fingers and arms behind your head. Do a pose for a full 2 minutes, right before an important job interview, meeting, exam, or anywhere you need to be more confident. You’ll likely appear and be more confident resulting in better interviews, negotiations, and relationship building. What an easy win!
