Interview with Hélène Bissay

Interview with Hélène Bissay

What is your experience of being a female engineer??

“My academic journey has been quite the adventure, encompassing studies at Ecole des Mines d’Alès in France and Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. These institutions provided me with a lot of knowledge, both technical expertise and essential soft skills, and gave me the opportunity to connect with a diverse array of individuals. Entering the professional world, I've continued to broaden my horizons across various fields.”?

For me, the versatility of an engineering degree is its greatest strength, offering the opportunity to delve into any sector, career path, or role that sparks your interest.

What inspired you to develop a career in engineering???

“My fascination with the sciences has always guided me, steering me towards a career in engineering as the natural choice for my interests and skills.”?

How has Lhoist supported your career??

“My journey with Lhoist began as a V.I.E (International Volunteering in company) within the Business Innovation Center (BIC), contributing to the water and non-ferrous divisions. Subsequently, I embraced a new role as a market analyst for Lhoist Southern Europe.”?

Throughout my career, Lhoist and my mentors have been incredibly supportive, fostering my professional growth and expanding my expertise without boundaries.

What advice would you give someone who would like to get into engineering or is considering completing an engineering qualification??

“The journey may be challenging, yet the outcome is rewarding! Embrace curiosity and don’t limit yourself to what you know.”?

Have there been challenges on your road to becoming an engineer which you have faced due to being a woman? If yes, (how) have you overcome these??

“Navigating a male-dominated space as a young woman can present its challenges. There have been moments when my gender seemed to be the focus rather than my contributions. Yet, I've built a supportive network that uplifts me. Engaging in conversations with women who've walked this path before is invaluable—they offer advice on handling bias. Most crucially, it's important to ensure your voice is always heard.”?
