Interview with Erik Segerstéen: Developing Innovation and Impact at Knightec

Knightec offers a unique environment for ambitious individuals who want to explore dynamic career paths in product development. Erik Segerstéen , who started at Knightec in 2015?as an embedded software tester?and now works as?an advisor on embedded software, shares his story and insights about why Knightec is the ideal place to build a fulfilling career.

What attracted you to Knightec?

I started at Knightec in 2015. What attracted me then was working with product development, embedded programming, and testing my code on actual hardware. Knightec attracted me mainly because, as an individual consultant, I didn't have to work with sales or feel pressured to find my assignments. It was a security to have the same salary regardless of my assignments. I was also drawn by the idea of working with several different types of projects and companies without changing employers.

What is the most unique or exciting part of working at Knightec?

We boast a broad range of mechanics, project management, and software expertise within the same workplace.?This?means we have all the skills needed for product development projects under one roof, allowing us to tackle exciting projects while fostering knowledge-sharing across teams.

How has Knightec supported your development and career goals?

I began my journey at Knightec working in test development, writing automated tests in Python that ran on emulators and HiL. At first, I was skeptical about focusing on test development since I preferred implementing new functions rather than testing them. However, I trusted my manager, Patrik Lyktberg, who emphasized that the best developers have a strong foundation in testing.

After about 1.5 years in test development, an opportunity arose to help start a larger new project with Scania buses. Knightec's part of the project grew to about 20 people from Stockholm and ?rnsk?ldsvik. My role in the project initially focused on test development but later expanded to implementation.

Can you share something about your job at Knightec that you are proud of?

The most fun project I've done was the blood-spiking robot for QLinea, mainly because we worked as a tight Knightec team and had a close dialogue with the product's end user. We developed the whole product, from mechanics and electronics to software, in-house at Knightec.?

We conducted a feasibility study and a user study and ultimately developed a prototype the lab staff could use.?The final product resembled a 3D printer capable of moving a cassette with syringes and injecting test tubes with dangerous bacteria. It was?an enjoyable project that allowed us to witness the entire product development chain, from initial concepts to real-world applications.

How do you see the future at Knightec?

I'm excited to continue growing at Knightec. With each new assignment, there's always something new to learn.?I'm currently?developing software for a charging station using C++ in a Linux environment,??where I need to gain more experience.?It's fun! In the future, I want to contribute to Knightec's sustainability efforts and help us approach software development more sustainably.
