Interview with Dr. Sajesh Asokan, National President – Geriatric Society of India, and Organizing Secretary – GSICON

In a recent conversation with Dr. Sajesh Asokan, the National President of the Geriatric Society of India and Organizing Secretary of GSICON 2024, we delved into the importance of geriatrics in India and the need for worldwide collaboration to enhance the quality of life for older adults.

The Future of Geriatrics in India: Challenges and Opportunities

India is undergoing a significant demographic transition. By 2050, the population of older adults is expected to reach 319 million, representing 20% of the total population. This rapid increase will undoubtedly strain the healthcare system, demanding immediate attention and action.

For ageing well, it is essential to focus on five key pillars: nutrition, hydration, physical stimulation, social engagement, and cognitive stimulation

Mental Health and Neurodegenerative Diseases

Older adults have unique mental health needs, with a higher risk of issues such as depression and anxiety. Additionally, dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases, predominantly affecting older adults, are expected to triple by 2050. These challenges necessitate specialized care and intervention strategies.

Embracing Technology

Technology has the potential to significantly enhance the quality of life for seniors. However, it should complement traditional care practices rather than replace human caregivers. Integrating innovative solutions with compassionate care is key to ensuring the well-being of older adults.

Supportive Policies and Socio-Economic Support

Supportive policies are crucial for creating an environment where older adults can age with dignity and independence. The government must develop socio-economic support mechanisms and more inclusive insurance policies to address the needs of the elderly, who often require the most coverage.
