An Interview with Claire Robertson - IWD 2022

How has Marston's supported you on your career journey? Were you provided with a leadership mentor?

During my time at Marston’s, I have had the opportunity to meet an external mentor who was familiar with our culture and structure and could therefore offer insight and guidance. Also, I have been extremely privileged to be a part of the Women In Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure (WiHTL) programme, a six-month external programme that provides valuable insight and support for the challenges faced by females within our industry.

What has been the most significant barrier in your career? How did you overcome that?

The biggest barrier is being a female and a mum within our industry - there are many unconscious biases associated with this and the only way to overcome these barriers is to demonstrate capability and help drive the voice around competent females within our business.

We all have a responsibility to stand up and be accountable and to challenge bias when we see it. Women in our industry need to support each other and provide a strong, collaborative network to create the platform for success

How have you built confidence over the course of your career?

During my career, I have been fortunate to build informal mentor relationships with more senior people. These individuals have been responsible for challenging my thinking and recognising my successes which helps to build confidence.

I have worked hard to build a network of contacts across a number of businesses who can help validate thought processes and share best practice which helps to boost confidence.

Finally, being able to recruit exceptional individuals to surround myself with which means I have the confidence that comes from working in a strong, unified team.

What motivated you to step up and become a Regional Operations Manager?

The opportunity to help shape a team that collectively leads the business agenda through their ability to motivate and engage people was a huge appeal. The chance to work more collaboratively within the business allows me to understand the wider Marston’s agenda and the direction of the business, being part of that narrative is hugely enjoyable.

What advice would you give to women who want to be leaders?

My advice would be to always display humility as it ensures you are open to endless possibilities. You should develop resilience as it will help you stay positive and cope with adversity. Build advocates within the business, people who can ‘stand in your corner’, help to support you on your journey, and also become an advocate yourself.

As you develop on your career journey, take the time to help someone else on their journey. Have fun! It will create positive energy and that will ensure you are surrounded by positivity.

How do you balance being a working mum and a Regional Operations Manager?

I start by letting go of 'mum guilt',?I put effort into building a support network around my family to allow me to be flexible! Mostly I organise the night before so mornings are easier, trying to get three children out of the house is always a task. I try and simplify as many things as possible at home.

Most importantly I ask for help when I need it, you can't do everything by yourself and sometimes you have to learn to accept ‘good enough'!
