If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading. – Lao Tzu
Teams like all social groups have defining characteristics including:
- Task and Relationship interactions.
- Goals as a reason for their existence.
- A level of interdependence to achieve the goals.
- An evolving structure of regularities, norms, roles and relations.
- A level of unity.
The challenge is once the team forms, it settles into a set of habitual patterns. Once established, the team stays with them, becoming what they practice each day. If a team is struggling and burning people out, it will continue to spiral down until some intervention or explosion occurs.
Developing high performing teams capable of agilely adapting to the evolving and emerging complexity of today’s world, requires intervening in the patterns on a regular basis to generate learning, growth and improved effectiveness.
How do you intervene to develop your teams?
Over the past seven posts I’ve shared Six Steps to Develop Teams. One of the enabling conditions is good team coaching at the appropriate times to provide the interventions required for continuous team improvement. Team coaching can be done by members of the team, leaders of the team, external stakeholders, or by an external coach partnering with the team.
To generate the results executives are asked to deliver, they need to invest in team leadership and coaching skill development within the context of the work to be done.
