The Intersection of History and Health Equity is Healing: A Short Film

Originating from the constructs of public health, nursing and economics, the intersection of health inequities and history is palpable. Research and evidenced based data has most commonly come from the structured bias in policy, procedure and protocol development and advancement. This today offers clarity to the historical account of inequities. I am most proud that our research team continues to develop great digital content to educate from this evolution.

The Heckler Report was the landmark report published in 1985 by the United States Government and named after the then Secretary of Health and Human Services, Margaret Heckler. The report was the nations first effort to recognize the effects of health inequalities among minorities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, health equity is achieved when every person has the opportunity to attain their full health potential.”? A definition based on the premise that health begins where we live, learn, work, and play, these social determinants of health play an integral part in everyone's ability to access that full potential. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

In our most recent short film we discuss why access to care, racism and structural bias have historically denied underserved populations the full opportunity to better health.
