The Intersection of Discipline and Technology
In today's world, our reliance on technology is so ingrained that we often overlook its immense capabilities and use vast computing power for silly tasks…..like sharing a meme!??However, in our pursuit of technological advancement, we must not overlook the enduring value of discipline.
Consider the convenience of booking a clinic appointment via a mobile app. This technology allows you to view available slots, secure a booking, make payments, and receive a confirmation SMS. Behind the scenes, the clinic staff is automatically notified, and cancellations are managed seamlessly. However, despite this advanced system, many of us have experienced situations where, despite having a confirmed appointment, the doctor is unavailable, or we are made to wait beyond our scheduled time. This is a classic case of excellent technology marred by a lack of discipline.
For instance, my daughter requires frequent visits to a renowned orthodontist, Dr. Jayesh Rahalkar, in Pune, due to her congenital condition, Hemifacial Microsomia (HFM). On our first visit, I was surprised to see the receptionist scheduling appointments using a pencil and an ancient file. Initially, I felt sympathy for her seemingly outdated methods. However, over time, I came to appreciate the team's meticulous discipline.
The clinic's appointment system, though simple, is managed with unwavering precision. Given the high demand, securing an appointment usually requires a wait of 2-3 weeks. As your appointment date approaches, the team consistently follows up with a confirmation call. If the doctor becomes unavailable, they ensure the patient is informed well in advance. They are trained for basic technicalities of the trade. They don’t have any fancy tech for handling appointments, but they operate with a military discipline!
This experience reinforces my belief that while technology can be a powerful tool, discipline remains an indispensable element for success.
