Interruptions are a waste of time!

By focusing on the Top 6 things to do each day, you bring focus to the most important activities you really need to get done each day.

This is a great place to start, but it can still be a challenge to get through your list. Interruptions are one of the main reasons that get in the way.

And Smartphones are one of the biggest culprits!

But it's no longer just phone calls and text messages that interrupt our mental flow. It’s also those pesky little alerts we receive when a new email or an update from Facebook or LinkedIn etc etc … comes through.

These alerts tempt us to check our devices frequently. This interrupts our work and mental flow when we need to get things done. They interrupt our momentum.

The good news is that it doesn’t need to be this way. All of these notifications can be turned off. (Imagine that! )

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Think carefully about what you really need to be alerted to. This might be phone calls and text messages.
  2. Switch off all other notifications and alerts.

This simple step allows you to take control of your smartphone rather than it controlling you. It will also give you an additional level of focus for the important tasks you need to get through each day (well at least the Top 6 things!)

It’s worth giving it a try!

Great advice Peter Knight& Kate Groom I dumb it down to another level - create one goal a day and achieve it.... At the end of a week you have achieved 5 and in a year 240... Now write a list with 240 things on it and try and achieve them in a year - won't happen !

simple but effective adice

I like interruptions Peter Knight during some of the things that I do ... maybe most! For example, I create new thinking, insights, fresh ideas, intellectual assets, taglines, straplines, keynote presentations ... and it's impossible to sit down and complete these tasks in one end-to-end hit. Often the interruption ... if I choose to take it ... recharges the creative battery or causes me to reflect. It's a bit like waking up in the middle of the night with a great idea, or getting up in the morning with an answer to yesterday's problem. Interruptions work for me!
