“I’m not in the White House. Tried for that job. I didn’t get it. So, all I can do from where I am is to say, ‘All right, how do we get things done from here?’”
~ Mitt Romney, US Senator and 2016 Republican Presidential Candidate
One of the quickest and surest ways to interrupt flow is to be at odds with what is. Thinking that things should be different than they are suggests we have control of things we don’t have control over. All we ever have control of are our thoughts and behaviors. The outcomes linked to our actions are out of our control. This is one of the basic tenets of stoic philosophy.
?The mark of true leadership – whether it be organizational or personal – is the ability to hold the big picture and not be attached to results. I can’t control where or how the river is flowing. I can control how I think and move in and on that river as my domain. Learning to master my thinking and my attitude is key. This is the true power of awareness.
?Any increase in awareness is automatically accompanied by an increase in the numbers and kinds of choices I have available. Part of developing personal mastery is noting which choices are in service of my purpose and which are in service of egoic desires. As Senator Romney points out, we want to become capable of regularly asking a considered question of “…how do we get things done from here?” This is what moves us back into flow and it is what will keep us in flow more consistently.

This week pay attention to not being solely informed by what your five senses are telling you is real and possible. Leadership is the art of revealing possibilities. Practice being an artist by bringing your awareness and your attention to your intuition, your reasoning and your imagination.

1 年This is thought provoking, Thsnks, Blaine! I read recently that in northern Oregon, the Klamath River DAMS are being removed by authorities in an effort to clean up, and REWILD the river! “Let It FLOW!”

1 年Isn't it cool how duality works? We have to surf the flow of the universe, but we also can decide how we surf and even improve our odds. Kind of like being created by the external and creating from the internal: we can still decide where we surf and when, as it will guide us to the spot that fit us. I learned over time to feel the waves of the universe.. it really was enlightening on how we can create with the flow. In life and business.
