With the Olympics captivating our screens and our conversations this week, the intersection between athletics and business has been on my mind more than ever. I frequently speak to how my “Athlete of Life” mentality created a foundation that impacted my entire journey, professional and athletic. The skills I developed in the gym, honed through years of athletic discipline, laid a robust foundation for my professional achievements and has underscored a universal truth: the principles of athletic success are synonymous with business excellence.
Bridging Competitive Sports and Business
- Health First, Always: As an athlete, my first priority is my health—without our health, we can't compete at the highest level. This philosophy carries over into my business practices, where I prioritize my well-being to ensure I can support my ventures and maintain a peak level of performance across all areas of my life. If my body and mind aren’t performing at a constant level of excellence, my businesses and relationships will suffer.
- Fiduciary Responsibility: In team sports, an athlete's responsibility extends beyond personal performance; it encompasses the team's collective success. Similarly, in business, I carry my team and my consumers by placing my heart at the center of every decision. This approach isn't just about leadership; it's about fostering a sense of collective responsibility and shared success.
- Providing My Own Permission: The intrinsic self-governance required to excel in sports has taught me that success doesn't wait for permission. If, like me, you are continually doing things that have never been done before, things are going to be uncomfortable. Every day presents a new opportunity to push the boundaries of what is possible, and I cannot create new ways of being if? I need to ask anyone else for permission.?
- Redefining The Win: One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned from sports is to redefine what 'winning' means. In business, as in sports, not every endeavor will be a triumph, but every effort can lead to growth - even the failures come with powerful lessons and setbacks are often integral to your ultimate success. My CFO Darrell just shared an Albert Einstein quote that sums it up perfectly: “Failure is success in progress.” This perspective allows me to approach each challenge knowing that every outcome will help me get better.
- Greatness is Not Achieved Alone: No athlete—or entrepreneur—achieves greatness alone. The smartest thing a high performer can do is build an equally high-performing team. In sports and in business, I’ve found that the synergy between individual prowess and the support of a team forms the cornerstone of success; it’s about the individual support of the collective and the collective support of the individual. Building a team that mirrors my drive and dedication has been crucial.
The Lifelong Impact of Sports
Sports have not only shaped my life; they have defined it. For athletes and entrepreneurs everywhere, the journey doesn't end with the medals and accolades. Every single triumph and each and every defeat is a stepping stone to what is next. As I reflect on this journey, I'm reminded of the continuous interplay between discipline and acumen—essential ingredients iny my life.
To all athletes, entrepreneurs, and my fellow Athletes of Life: let’s cherish our victories, learn from our defeats, and use every experience to strengthen our resolve. Let's continue to push boundaries, redefine futures, and inspire greatness in ourselves and others.
