Interoperability and Integration in C4ISR – Resetting the Canadian Armed Forces and Defence Enterprise
The 10th annual C4ISR and Beyond conference on 30 January 2024 will be focusing on interoperability and integration with a view to “getting through the tensions to see interoperability and integration lived” – at scale – across CAF and with interagency and international partners – and at speed – keeping up with allies and getting ahead of our adversaries. The conference will allow us to unpack and understand the tensions and barriers in the way of seeing these achieved. It will expose ways of working through those tensions as experienced by others. And it will focus on the essential elements and conditions that need to be set in order for the CAF and its partners to establish a digital beachhead and capacity to break out and see results delivered – to the pan domain force in the pan domain fight. The urgency to be truly interoperable and integrated is clear. The need to be proficient in seeing this realized at echelon – strategic to tactical is not debatable these days.

Getting it right
The last … that must be first
In this final ‘note of encouragement’ toward Canada’s overdue defence policy update, we look at what must come first in a Western-democratic, all-volunteer force: the individuals who serve, the culture and context in which they serve, and the institutions that develop these.

Perspective
The Future Integrated Training Environment
The Future Integrated Training Environment (FITE) is a Canadian Army concept that addresses the integration of live, virtual, and constructive training environments to support and improve individual and collective readiness. In essence, it advocates for the use of integrated and networked simulation programs to effectively and realistically prepare Canadian soldiers for the contemporary operating environment. The first tangible implementation of the FITE will be the procurement of the Land Virtual Crew Training System (LVCTS). The LVCTS will provide a range of advanced combat vehicle virtual simulations that will transform the way the Canadian Army conducts individual and collective training for mounted combat operations.

From the Web
Christmas came early for the Canadian Armed Forces in 2023. Last month, the Canadian government announced the acquisition of up to 16 P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, 11 MQ9-B SkyGuardian remotely piloted systems (i.e. drones), and a suite of land command and communications and surveillance systems. These purchases are on top of earlier decisions to purchase 88 F-35 fighter aircraft and nine CC-330 Husky transport and refuelling planes. Over on the naval side, Irving Shipbuilding completed its fifth Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship for the military, and rumour has it that the government will soon greenlight the first batch of Canadian Surface Combatants.
Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre is set to retire this summer, after nearly three years in the position.
The Prime Minister’s Office made the announcement Friday afternoon and thanked Eyre for his service.
