Internship Spotlight: Jorge Avelar-Lopez
Over the next few months, Making Waves College & Alumni Program will be sharing profiles of some amazing young and talented Wave-Makers still in college. Today we are profiling Jorge Avelar-Lopez, a first waver from our Bay Area scholarship, sophomore at Stanford University majoring in computer science, Explore Microsoft intern in Seattle, and Ignite Youth Digital Marketing Fellow through Google.
Jorge's Explore Microsoft internship is a 12-week summer internship specifically designed for college underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores). It offers a rotational experience that enables students to gain experience in different software engineering roles, giving them a hands on experience with various tools and programming languages. This on-the-job learning opportunity will be complemented with mentoring, community building, and networking. The Ignite Youth Digital Marketing Fellowship provides students with the experience of using their skill set to help small businesses in the San Jose area grow their business.
Jorge started investigating different internship possibilities once school started in September. He got ideas of various opportunities from his friends, peers in his clubs, colleagues from the internship he holds during the school year, and his own research. Jorge was extremely organized with his deadlines and sought support from those in the field for interview prep and resume/cover letter support. This commitment paid off because after a very disciplined and diligent application and interview process, Jorge had tremendous opportunities to choose from. Congratulations Jorge on all of your hard work!
