Internship Spotlight: Daniel Cervantes Liera

Over the next few months, Making Waves College & Alumni Program will be sharing profiles of some amazing young and talented Wave-Makers still in college. Today, we are profiling Daniel Cervantes - a first waver in our Bay Area scholarship, Sophomore at UC Davis majoring in Chicano Studies, and Recreational Leader for the City of San Pablo.

This summer was Daniel's second spent as a Recreational Leader the City of San Pablo's summer camp. There, he works with elementary and middle-schoolers. As a staff member, Daniel facilitates indoor and outdoor activities for the youth. Some of his tasks ranged from doing arts and crafts to playing intensive dodgeball games with the students. Through this summer camp, the kids also had access to swimming lessons and other programs that teach the youth about environmental sustainability.

Daniel says, "Overall this job allows me to contribute to the growth of the kids in my community. This job has also enabled me to improve my communications skills since I am interacting with students and staff on a daily basis. Although I don’t know specifically what job I would like to have in the future, I do know that I want to be involved in the lives of youth that come from low income communities. This job provides me with the opportunity to engage with kids of all ages while I interact with them during activities that will maintain them physically and mentally active."

Daniel's coach says about him, "Daniel works with a student group at UC Davis that supports young people in the juvenile system. He is extremely dedicated to supporting others and strengthening his community. He is also dedicated to his own growth as a person, student, and young professional. Daniel looks for opportunities and when he gets access to one - he makes the most out of it." For example, Daniel was a panelist at CAP's Summer Bridge for the Second Wave of the Bay Area scholarship (shown in the picture above). The incoming freshmen were empowered by his honesty and wisdom. Again, there Daniel goes again - always looking for ways to make his community stronger.
