Like many other professionals I also get request for internship from everywhere. What worries me is the timing and frequency of internships. While every college has scheduled internship system but I think due to peer pressure or due to leverage some candidates are nowadays seeking internship the day they join the course.
I have come across situations where candidates have just joined the undergraduate program and has not even studied for 3 months but are seeking winter internship.
Then there are resume which are decorated with beauty parade of firm names where person has done internships. So if it is 3 year program and they have winter (1 month) and summer breaks ( 3 month each ) you can see that they have done 4-6 internship. Virtually they have been searching for next internship the day they join any internship.
I am bit old fashioned I think any serious internship is only possible if you have good basic understanding of the subject and internship duration gives you opportunity to learn about the project, experience the culture and values of the firm and try deploying your theoretical knowledge into a practical issue and come out with solution or possibility of some solution.
Hence, whenever I see resume with more than 2 internship during undergraduate program I conclude that the person is not serious enough to understand the value of learning and is extremely resourceful to find next job. So why should I waste my time on such candidates as they have problem of plenty!!!
Also I feel candidates like these capture potential options of other students who may not be so much resourceful but need at least one internship opportunity to add to their knowledge and hone the skills. Such candidates not only screw-up their own learning but also pollute internship ecosystem by blocking chances for others.
If you are fortunate to be chooser, choose the best but leave the rest! Enjoy the winter and summer vacations as you don't know when will you get these again.

7 年Agreed! But the problem is more critical, I wonder why do students are more worried for their Internships these days, maybe they are enjoying it? But the answer is "No"…. The fascination towards corporatism for the sake of getting Jobs on a later stage; compels them to target more and more Internships, erstwhile to prove their own competencies in the identical or sometimes interdisciplinary trades to justify their own traits in the capitalist world to revolutionise the incessant phenomena.

7 年I agree with you, sir ...... What I can say about tier 1 colleges is that there are following categories of students. First, those who possess a discerning attitude and astute ability to find the apt path. Second, who are in a state of confusion about the right internship and in-turn career path. Third, those who just need an internship ( with a healthy stipend ) or just any internship to mention on their CV / Resume . Such scenarios are prevalent due to one reason : Lack of proper career mentoring / counselling. Once it is worked upon, the status will undoubtedly improve !
