University Students! It’s that time of year again—internship application season for Summer 2025 is just around the corner. With companies gearing up to post their openings in the coming weeks, it’s crucial to start preparing now. To help you hit the ground running, I’ve put together a list of five key steps to ensure you’re ready when the applications open:
- Update Your Resume Take a moment to refresh your resume. Add any summer work experiences, internships, or projects you’ve completed. Make sure your resume is polished—have it reviewed by someone you trust or leverage Career Services at your school for professional feedback. A well-crafted resume is your ticket to standing out!
- Engage with Target Companies Start connecting with the companies you’re interested in. Follow them on LinkedIn and check out your fall career fair schedule. Reach out to current employees or previous interns for insights and advice. By networking before applications open, you’ll be better positioned to make an impression when the time comes. Be sure to also make a list of questions for each company you are interested in as it relates to culture, fit, and the position.
- Optimize Your Online Profiles Double-check that your Handshake profile is complete and up-to-date. If you’re on WayUp or RippleMatch, make sure those profiles are polished as well. And don’t forget LinkedIn—recruiters are increasingly using technology to find top candidates, so ensure your profiles on these platforms are optimized and professional.
- Research Job Descriptions Familiarize yourself with the types of internships that interest you. Look up job descriptions from previous years, such as "Software Engineering Intern @ X Company," to understand the skills and qualifications companies are seeking. This knowledge will help you tailor your profiles and applications to highlight the most relevant skills.
- Follow Job Search Experts & Organizations Keep up with content creators who focus on job searching and career advice for students as well as organizations that support students with career development. A few examples are: The HITEC Foundation, Conectado, AnitaB, Latina Engineer, SHPE, and your University Career Services! Their tips and insights can provide valuable guidance throughout your internship search.
By taking these steps now, you’ll set yourself up for success and make the application process smoother.
