Andrew (Andy) Palms, Executive Director of Infrastructure with Information and Technology Services

In 1981, driven by a fascination for computers and architecture, Andy Palms embarked on his journey at the University of Michigan. This intersection of infrastructure and information technology has become the focal point of his exploration. Equipped with a solid background in both domains, Palms has a unique ability to navigate the challenges and complexities of his role.

Palms, the executive director of Infrastructure with Information and Technology Services, designs data networks, establishes telecommunications systems, optimizes Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, and ensures the seamless functionality of life safety radios. Through his work, Palms directly impacts the communication capabilities of the campus, providing essential services to the university community.

"I placed the initial network into a dorm," Palms recollected, "and initially, not many people signed up for it, since they didn't quite grasp its concept. However, it swiftly gained popularity."

One of Palms’ notable achievements was spearheading the development of a new residence hall at the University of Michigan. Boasting a capacity of 2,300 beds, this hall surpasses the size of any existing residence facility on campus. Collaborating with architecture, engineering, and construction teams, Palms diligently ensured excellent Wi-Fi and cellular services for the residents.

“While considering the diverse communication needs of a building, including Wi-Fi service, it is crucial to envision the future requirements for the next 50 years. Just like the occupants of the building, their communication capabilities should be prioritized.”

Beyond the realm of residence halls, Palms emphasized his work extending to every department and space on campus, each with unique communication requirements. From the football stadium to the campus police department and mathematics department, Palms and his team develop customized solutions to cater to these diverse needs. Together, they strive to transform the university into a technologically advanced and connected hub.

Did you know...? Printing at U-M: A Comprehensive Guide to Convenient and Cost-Free Services

By Yu-Jin Choi - ITS Marketing Communications Intern

Stepping onto the U-M campus for the first time, I found myself unsure about the printing facilities available to me. Questions swirled in my mind: How and where could I print my materials? Did I need to pay for this service? Little did I know that U-M offers an array of convenient and cost-free printing options, designed to meet the needs of its diverse community.

U-M recognizes the importance of providing accessible computing services to all eligible members of its community. Whether you're a student, faculty member, full-time or part-time staff, or a sponsored affiliate, you have access to standard computing services at no charge. Among these services, U-M boasts an extensive printing network, consisting of over 400 devices spread across the campus. So, fret not, as U-M has got your printing, copying, and scanning needs covered.

To facilitate your printing experience, U-M provides MPrint, a user-friendly system that offers flexibility and convenience. With MPrint, you have two main options for printing: sending your print job to a specific printer or using the virtual queue called "Follow Me." When utilizing Follow Me, your print job remains accessible at any printer on campus for a period of 24 hours. This ingenious solution ensures that you never print to the wrong printer, waste time on an out-of-service printer, or risk someone else getting hold of your documents. Simply select "Follow Me" as your print destination, and rest assured that your files will be available whenever and wherever you need them.

So, how exactly can you send your files to print? U-M offers four convenient methods:

  • MPrint Mobile App: Utilize the dedicated mobile application to effortlessly send your print jobs.
  • Install & Print to Follow Me on Your Computer: Set up the Follow Me feature on your computer for seamless printing.
  • Print from Any Campus Computing Location: Take advantage of the numerous printing facilities across campus to conveniently print your files.
  • Upload Files to mprint.umich.edu: Access the MPrint web portal and easily upload your files for printing.

Moreover, U-M ensures that releasing your print jobs is as straightforward as possible. If you've sent your job to Follow Me, you have two options for releasing it:

  • MPrint Mobile App: Utilize the mobile app once again to conveniently release your print jobs.
  • MCard Swiping or Logging into a Printing Station: At any printing station on campus, simply swipe your MCard or log in to release your documents.

While the printing services at U-M are designed for your convenience, it's essential to keep a few rules in mind to maintain a smooth printing experience:

  • Avoid inserting different paper or materials into the printers, such as resumé paper or transparency sheets. Doing so may cause jams and damage the printer's internal components, and you will be held responsible.
  • Refrain from taking paper from the Sites printers. This act is considered theft, and U-M takes disciplinary action against those who engage in such behavior.
  • Do not power off the printers. If you encounter any issues with a printer, reach out to the knowledgeable Sites staff or report the problem to the ITS Service Center at 734-764-4357.

For more detailed instructions on printing at U-M's campus computing sites, I recommend visiting the official U-M IT Services website. Here, you can explore the various printing options and gain a deeper understanding of how to maximize your printing experience on campus.
