Interning at National Life Group
Without hesitation, I can admit that interning at National Life Group has been a life-changing experience. NLG is a rapidly-growing life insurance company that truly exemplifies their values while holding a warm, welcoming culture. Not only have they opened my eyes in the direction I plan to pursue, but they have also taught me countless technical and interpersonal lessons, given me a realistic view on multiple job paths, and have imprinted their values onto me.
In my experiences as their Payment Center’s intern, I have learned the complexities behind their systems/processes. I was tasked with learning their transaction processing system while finding any process improvement opportunities. In this procedure, I learned multiple insurance and investment related details such as the clauses of 403(b) plans, financial rules behind the payment amounts, and how they affect the processes of data entry. Correspondingly, I learned coding in Visual Basic and operating in Mainframe to come up with pattern identification methods and solutions, which all together brought me an enlightening perspective on the sides and connections of a business and IT environment.
Outside of these day-to-day tasks, I was able to explore other aspects of the business world. In the Business Communications aspect, the intern group received multiple opportunities to network with the company executives and had classroom meetings for improving business acumen to enhance our work-place interaction. We even received a final project covering a topic that reaches to a different field; in my case, I was given a marketing project, which allowed me to explore a new department. Doing so has pushed me to understand a sector that I haven’t even considered while giving me a newer perspective on looking at my own field.
Working at NLG has been an uplifting experience, and I am extremely grateful to them for giving me the opportunity to learn a variety of skills while applying them in real-world situations. #UTDBSFIN #JSOMINTERN #NLG
