Internet of Things Is Just Getting Started; Will Your Org Be Ready?

The best way to describe the Internet of Things (IoT) is like this:

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

A complete IoT system integrates four distinct components: sensors/devices, connectivity, data processing, and a user interface.

Sensors or devices collect data from their environment. This could be as simple as a temperature reading or as complex as a full video feed.

Next, that data is sent to the cloud through a variety of methods including Wi-Fi, LPWAN, Satellite, Bluetooth, cellular or a direct connection to the internet through ethernet.

Once the data gets to the cloud,?software?performs some kind of processing on it.

In the final IoT process, the information is made useful to the end-user in some way. This could, for example, be an email or text alert. Also, a?user might have an interface that allows them to proactively check in on the system.

The number of IoT devices by 2030 is expected to be over 24 billion. Industry analysts expect to see developments in 5G, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics take the industry to new levels.
