Internet Exchange Points, Explained
Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) are crucial for the functioning of the Internet, connecting Autonomous Systems (AS) operated by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). These ISPs have a tiered model, with Tier 1 being the backbone of the Internet, Tier 2 using a combination of paid transit and peering, and Tier 3 solely purchasing transit. IXPs allow for efficient exchange of internet traffic between entities, and can be created through various methods such as VLAN or EVPN. Being connected to an IXP reduces latency and costs compared to routed traffic.
