Internet Downtime and the Optus Solution: A Case Study
THE CHALLENGE
Tech evolution demands the upgrade of legacy Wi-Fi infrastructure and cabling to increase management capabilities.
This nationally recognized retail chain founded in the mid-1900s was experiencing trouble with internet downtime in multiple locations. The difficulty in usage was due to the degradation of the legacy Wi-Fi routers and having minimal wireless access points (WAP) — leading to unstable internet connection in store, delays in communication between team members, and compromised security. Sick of these conditions, the retailer reached out to Optus for a solution.
THE OPTUS SOLUTION
Nationwide router upgrades & WAP replacement and refresh
First agreeing to a trial period with Optus at several pilot stores in 2019, the retailer was pleased with the initial results and chose to continue updates at other stores. Optus immediately began work at 280 company retail locations across the country. The legacy WAPs were outdated and could not keep up with the retailer’s needs, so they were replaced by new Cisco-Meraki technology that could properly accommodate customer bandwidth. Technicians refreshed and replaced the WAPs in each building for a stable, updated internet connection storewide. Additionally, each building contained an average of eight to fifteen WAPs. Optus technicians identified the location of each access point and installed more to further amplify the retailer’s internet capabilities, progressing each site to utilize an average of thirty WAPs.
THE IMPACT
Enhanced security, manageability improvement, and wireless frequencies available storewide
Installing new WAPs and increasing WAP locations throughout stores improved manageability of online functions for employees throughout the retail locations. Team members were able to maintain wireless capabilities and manage technology with significantly more ease than with the older models. This standardization across locations simplified processes for employees so that they can focus their attention on initiatives to further retail sales. Optus enhanced internet security for this retailer through the installation process. The implementation of newer generation Wi-Fi technology enhanced security capabilities across the company. With fresh technology upgrading their previously lagging internet, this retail chain continues to work with Optus to increase system backup capability and enable gateway collaboration for employees.
