Internet of the Deep Fake
From the time the Internet came into existence, content on the World Wide Web has either been produced by humans or by "agents" under human supervision. But now for the first time, there's a real possibility of finding machine-generated content on the internet. As AI, especially Generative AI, becomes more potent and prevalent in content creation, very soon it will become extremely hard to ascertain the genuineness of any content on the internet.
The variety and form of content on the internet are also quite mind-boggling. It involves hard facts and figures such as economic measures, creative writeups, works of art, music compositions, and much more. Generative AI models are capable of generating all these and much more to the chagrin of genuine producers of such content.
The genuineness of any content is likely to fall anywhere between absolut vodka and deep fake (or derived/generated). That any content is human-generated is also not a guarantee that it is 100% genuine. Hallucinating LLMs are capable of producing fiction that sounds so genuine that gullible humans are likely to fall into the trap and could bake in such content to produce new content, which may get classified as 100% genuine under the disguise of being human-generated.

Given this evolving challenge of the genuineness of the content on the internet, there's an urgent need to devise technologies and processes, that can help humans distinguish fake from original. Perhaps a technology that goes into the depth of content to measure its % genuineness. I'm aware of tools that can identify plagiarism in written content. But the challenge here is far more complex given the layers of genuine and fake information that may've gone into producing the content that's being assessed for its genuineness.
For now, I wish to conclude with an unfinished agenda to ponder upon that we're in for a world of deep fake under the disguise of being absolutely original. As my understanding of this problem further evolves, I hope to update with ideas and evolving technologies to counter this issue.
